Lesson Plan 1

The mathematics lesson plan outlines a 100 minute lesson for a grade 6/7 class on measuring and identifying different types of angles using a protractor, with the learning intention being that students can name and identify the six main angles and understand their degree ranges. The lesson involves introducing angles, exploring acute, right and obtuse angles through drawing and real world examples outside, and concluding with student reflections.

MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

Name: Alana Coppock School: Burton Primary School

Year Level: 6/7 Date: 21/8/18
No. of Students: 22 Estimated Duration: 100 minutes
Location: Burton

AREA OF LEARNING: Mathematics –Measurement and Geometry

TOPIC: Angles

BROAD OUTCOME:
Students will learn the six different angles and where to locate these angles in the real world. Students
will practice using a protractor.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES:

- Students to learn six different angles
- Students to relate angles to real world situations
- Students will practice using a protractor

LEARNING INTENTION:
To name and identify the six types of angles, and understand the range of degrees for each angle
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
- Name all six angles
- State the range of degree for all six angles
- Measure each angle to the nearest degree using a protractor
- Draw all six angles using a ruler
- Use the degree sign

AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM:
Investigate, with and without digital technologies, angles on a straight line, angles at a point and
vertically opposite angles. Use results to find unknown angles (ACMMG141)
- Identifying the size of a right angle as 90° and defining acute, obtuse, straight and reflex angles
- Measuring, estimating and comparing angles in degrees and classifying angles according to their
sizes

PREPARATION/ORGANISATION:
- Protractors
- Textbooks
- Rulers/Large whiteboard ruler for teacher to use
- Coloured pencils
- Pencils/pens

PROCESSES RESOURCES
ENGAGEMENT/INTRODUCTION:
10 minutes
- Mental maths activity: use arms to demonstrate different degrees, ask
students to name the degree as a whole class
- Introduce what an angle is – vertex, rays (arms) and the angle
 Draw this on the board to demonstrate – students to write in
their own books

EXPLORATION:
40 minutes
- Ask students how many different main angles are there? Answer: 6
- Ask students to raise their hand if they know any of these angles
- Acute, Right, Obtuse, Straight, Reflex and Full Revolution – write on the
board
- Only focus on 3 or 4 angles this lesson – acute, right and obtuse (start
with 3, potentially end the lesson with 1 more)
- Draw each angle on the white board – students copy into their books
- Ask students to name the degrees that relate to the particular angle

40 minutes
- Go outside into the school yard,
- Take the iPads and take photos in pairs of things around the school
yard that demonstrate the three angles taught
- Students to insert coloured arrows on the photos in a word document
to demonstrate the angles and then to print off and stick in their books
- Students can measure the angles with a protractor and write the
degrees of the angle in their books and state whether it is an acute, an
obtuse or a right angle

REFLECTION:
10 minutes
- Ask students to write a reflection in their books about what they learnt
and if they achieved the learning intention for the lesson
