YOU WILL NEED
   - Bible
   - Beige underlay
   - ‘house’ with a roof that can be taken off
   - Set of characters: Jesus, Scribes, 4 friends, paralytic, other crowd members
   - Felt mat for paralytic
Children are seated in a semi-circle ready to listen to the story. When children are settled, collect the Godly Play kit and
the Bible. Place these beside you.
Place Bible in front of you with your hand on it.
This story comes from our special book we call the Bible.
The Bible contains many stories of the amazing things Jesus did while he was on Earth. Jesus showed us that he was
our Saviour by performing miraculous deeds. This is a story of Jesus showing his goodness by healing a paralysed
man.
Place the underlay in the middle of the space.
Place the house on top of the underlay. Place hand on the house.
This is a house. This is where Jesus stayed when he visited the village of Capernaum.
Place Jesus inside the house.
Crowds of people were following Jesus to listen to him speak about the Kingdom of God.
Start adding people into the house, one by one.
Place scribes in the house.
Even scribes were listening to Jesus speak.
There were so many people listening to Jesus, that there was no room into the house, not even through the door.
Start bringing in the four believers.
Four friends tried to come to Jesus, bringing with them a paralysed man.
Lay down the mat and then the paralysed man, next to the four men. Lift paralysed man on mat onto the roof.
The friends desperately wanted to bring the paralysed man to Jesus, but they could not get through the large crowd.
They had seen and heard about Jesus doing so many wonderful things that they thought that if they could get their
friend to Jesus, maybe he could do something wonderful for their friend.
Start taking the roof off and lower the man on mat down in front of Jesus.
So, they carried him up onto the roof, and dug through the roof, and lowered their friend down to be in front of
Jesus.
When Jesus saw the faith of the four friends, he looked at the paralysed man and said, “son, your sins are forgiven”.
Point at the scribes.
Now the scribes were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “why does this fellow say these things? Only God can
forgive sins.”
Point at Jesus.
Jesus knew what the scribes were thinking. He said to the crowd, “which is easier to say? Your sins are forgiven, or
stand up, take your mat and walk? So you may know that I have authority on Earth to forgive sins…”
Turn Jesus to look at paralysed man.
Jesus then said to the paralysed man, “stand up, take your mat and go home!”
Lift the paralysed man upright and walk him out of the house.
At once, the paralysed man stood up.
Roll up the paralysed man’s mat.
He rolled up his mat.
Start walking the paralysed man out of the house.
And he did just what Jesus said, he walked out of the house in front of the amazed crowd.
Move some of the crowd up and down in excitement.
The crowd could not believe what they saw, they praised God saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
I wonder why the crowd were praising God for what Jesus did.
I wonder what they were doing or saying that was praising God.
I wonder how the crowd feels about Jesus after seeing him do such an amazing thing.
I wonder how the paralysed man feels now that he can finally stand and walk.
I wonder what the scribes are feeling about what has just happened.
I wonder who they think Jesus might be.
I wonder where you might be in this story.
Carefully pack away the materials into the box.
