4 MULTI-PURPOSE AUDITORIUM
INTRODUCTION
An auditorium is a room built to enable an audience to hear and watch performance to hear
and watch performances at venues such as theaters. Auditoria can be found in entertainment
venues, community halls and theaters and may be used for rehearsal, presentation,
performing arts productions, or as a learning space.
SITE VISITS
Actual site visits were very important part before we started planning, so that we came to
know about various drawbacks of auditoriums, kind of components which we should include
in our plan.
The field visits which we carried are-

DRAWBACKS OF VISITED AUDITORIUMS
We found certain drawbacks from the visits. They are listed as follows:
BHAVE NATYGRUH (SANGLI)
1. Parking space was not sufficient.
2. Only one side exit.
BALGANDHARVA NATYAMANDIR (MIRAJ)
1. Not suitable space for circulation of vehicles.
REQUIREMENTS OF OUR BUILDING
After our visit and study survey we decided to add following components in our plan:

2. Built up area= 9970m2.
3. RCC structure.
4. Foundation- Isolated column footing of depth 6m.
5. Capacity of auditorium = 850

PRINCIPLES OF PLANNING
We considered following principles of planning while planning our building:
ASPECT
It is disposition of doors and windows in external wall to receive nature’s gift like sunshine,
breeze and scenic beauty. A good aspect protects inmates from ill effects of weather and give
comfort and hygiene benefit. We have provided wooden framed windows in main hall.
PROSPECT
It is disposition of doors and windows with an objective to enrich the external view of
building. The kind of offsets provided in building it improves prospect of building. We have
provided columns without walls in front of auditorium.
PRIVACY
In our auditorium greenrooms, toilets are private area and control room , storerooms are
semiprivate area. Greenrooms positioning is done mostly at corners so that they will gain
their privacy values and storeroom is provided at backsite of the stage. Control room is
provided besides the stage.
External Privacy is achieved by Aesthetical Compound walls,and well decorated Gardening.
ROOMINESS
It controls feel of well-furnished room being spacious or congested. As our greenrooms are of
rectangular shape they have roominess.
GROUPING
Grouping is placement of various rooms in proximity to each other with relevance to
interdependencies, extent to privacy, minimal circulation and comfort and convenience. Store
is provided at backside of the stage for easy access.
CIRCULATION
It is comfort achieved through internal movement from one room to other. We have provided
minimal circulation space. We know that there are two types of circulation, horizontal and
vertical circulation. For the horizontal circulation between the rows of chairs we have given
sufficient space for circulation, also we have provided two vertical and one horizontal
passages between the rows .

SANITATION
1) LIGHTING
Natural sunlight is required for good visibility and safer work conditions. In auditorium we
have provided artificial illumination using CFLs. As we know that min. illumination required
in kitchen is 50lux.
2) VENTILATION
We know that in multipurpose auditorium 4 to 15 air changes are required per hour. Air
change means when stale air is replaced by fresh air. Total windows are provided for natural
ventilation. Sill height is 1.2m. Cross ventilation is planned. Window area is greater than 10%
of floor area of each room. Mechanical ventilation is maintained by air conditioner for
enclosed auditorium.

Seating capacity: 850
Volume of Auditorium: 2792.5 m3
Natural temperature of location: Summers: 320C to 400C at 35% RH
Winters: 130C to 300C at 40% RH
Required Indoor Conditions:
3) CLEANLINESS
We have given sanitary blocks facing one wall to external side. We have provided common
sanitary blocks for both the auditorium.
ELEGANCE:
Beautified elevation in form of sloping roof is provided. Porch columns add to the elegance.

Furniture is provided according to sizes of various rooms, size of chair according to the
comfort Furniture details are as follows:

PLUMBING DETAILS
Plumbing is core part of success of any building especially in our building. Source of
water for our building is municipal water and a bore well. Municipal water is for
drinking and cooking purpose and bore well is for other purposes like washing,
gardening etc. The details of underground water tank and overhead water tanks are as
follows:

• CAPACITY OF OHWT=1700*15=25000lit
• CAPACITY OF UGWT=1700*15 + 20000=58,000lit.

We have adopted 2 pipe system. Municipal drainage system is
available. We provided 100mm soil pipe, waste pipe with separate vent pipe to both pipes.
various types of traps as P traps, Q traps, S traps, nahani traps, gully traps, intercepting traps
,etc. are provided as per their use in various parts of plumbing system. We also have provided
various valves for controlling water flow.

ELECTRIFICATION
Electrification is basic need of any building for safe and satisfactory work. Type of wiring is
concealed wiring. Components for multipurpose auditorium are:

For 100 hours (per day 3 hours)
= 7672*100
=767200 w.hr.

FIRE SAFETY
In multipurpose auditoriums we must consider fire safety to prevent fire and for resistance to
spread of fire. Following precautions are taken in our auditorium:
• 50,000lit UGWT is considered for fire safety.
• There is installation of an automatic detection fire alarm system.
• Smoke detectors are provided.
• Potable fire extinguishers are as a backup.

CONCLUSION
To realize best physical arrangement of layout design, one must think about location and
requirements and choose most acceptable plan. We tried our best to plan and design a
multipurpose auditorium as our building, planning and design mini project. It effectively
utilizes space and fulfills all the requirements of a good multipurpose auditorium.
