Dubrovnik

Location
As we can see here the Croatian city Dubrovnik is located on the Adriatic Sea near Montenegro and
Bosnia and Hercegovina.

History
Originally called Ragusa, the city was founded in the 7th century as a refuge for coastal residents fleeing the
advancing barbarians. Part of the Mediterranean cultural constellation, yet intimately connected to the
Balkans. Catholic yet surrounded by Islamic and Orthodox neighbors.

The new city state used its status as a crossroads between cultures and civilizations. The city thrived through
extensive trade with other maritime ports such as Genoa, Pisa and Venice. Its continental trade networks also
extended its reach into the Balkans with the Ottoman Empire. At the beginning of the 13th century, Dubrovnik
fell under control of the most Serene republic, staying under its control until 1358.

In 1815, like much of the eastern Adriatic coast, Dubrovnik became part of the Habsburg Empire, where it
would remain until 1918.

PRESENT SITUATION
The population in Dubrovnik is around 43 thousand.

The number of tourist in Dubrovnik in a year is approximately 3 million people.

And the population in Croatia is approximately 4 million people.

The population of Croatia is failing every day because of the crisis.

The president of Croatia is Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović.

Sightseeing
From this landmark outside Dubrovnik Cathedral, all major state declarations were announced to local citizens.
Built in 1418, Orlando’s Column symbolized the city’s independence for nearly 400 years

In Dubrovnik there is many places to visit as Lovrijenac, Orlando’s column, city walls and many more.

You can try climbing from the top of Mount Srđ to the walls of the Old Town.

Gastronomy

You can find many great restaurants that serve the famous wine Pjenušac and the delicious and the special wild
duck called liska. And in the photograph we can see the walls of Dubrovnik.

Architecture
Dubrovnik’s ascent received a major blow in 1667 as a catastrophic earthquake destroyed a large
amount of the Renaissance art and architecture in the city. The Sponza and the Rector’s palace were
the only buildings that survived the natural disaster. The city was reconstructed in the baroque style
that has survived intact until today. This is the photo of a building in the old town.
Languages
They speak Croatian.

But with a dialect called Shtokavian or Štokavski.

They have a different alphabet from us.

Famous people
Jelena Perčin, this very popular Croatian actress was born in Dubrovnik.

Mihovil Španja, this famous Croatian athlete won many gold and silver medals in Paralympics Games.
He was born in 1984.

Sanja Jovanović, famous Croatian Olympic swimmer who made lots of great results.

Night life
From partying in Revelin Tower to exploring Dubrovnik's long-standing Summer Festival and sipping
cocktails on the sea cliffs, the city has an array of exciting options.

There are many bars for turist where they speak English and you can enjoy yourself.

Cultural activities
Dubrovnik Summer Festival

Each summer since 1950, Dubrovnik's old town has become a backdrop for open-air cultural
performances by internationally-renowned artists, including classical music, jazz, opera, theatre,
dance and film. Expect classical music recitals in the courtyard of the Rector's Palace, Shakespeare
plays on a terrace high above the sea at Lovrjenac Fortress

Cave bar More

In a natural cave, completed with wonderful rock formations and subtle lighting, you'll find this
extraordinarily romantic bar in the basement of Hotel More (pronounced 'moor-ay', which means
'sea').

Important facts and curiosities


Napoleon arrived at the gates of Dubrovnik in 1806.The city walls have never been breached.It was
involved in Europe’s most recent war.It’s cut off from the rest of Croatia.It’s home to the world’s
oldest pharmacy. Europe's longest operating pharmacy, and one of the oldest in the world, is located
inside Dubrovnik's Franciscan Monastery, founded in 1317.It's always been against slavery

Traditional music
The Linđo folk ensemble, one of Croatia’s finest cultural exports, is ready to dance its socks off for
you during the tourist season, when high-spirited energetic performances with amazing costumes
and haunting songs will echo through Lazareti.

This is a music group that exists 170 years it’s called narodna dubrovacka muzika.
