Randwick's Parking Meter Debate

Charles Matthews, a Randwick councillor for 27 years and former mayor, has started the No Parking Meters Party to oppose plans to introduce parking meters in Randwick. Matthews said parking meters are an extra tax on residents and hurt local businesses. In 2005 Randwick Council proposed installing 7,000 parking meters but backed down after protests from residents. Matthews believes meters will be pushed through after the September elections unless his party wins seats on the council. Current councillors deny that meters are being reconsidered.
