Assignment-1
1. Draw sketches of process or operations, control process diagrams and then convert to various different control
system configurations in terms of block diagrams which are possible with transfer functions
(a) Geyser (b) Anaerobic digester for level and pressure
control to produce methane gas
(c) Hot water tank for home heating (d) Hot water heater for home with thermostat
(e) Stirred tank heater for temperature control with (f) A blending process
steam or electricity
(g) Distillation column control in polymer manufacture (h) Taking shower
(i) Heat Exchanger in Process Industry (j) A stirrer tank heater
(k) Furnace combined with a heat exchanger for feed (l) A fermenter process variables
fluid heating
(m) Drug infusion control for critical care patient to (n) pH control of lactic acid fermentation
maintain mean arterial pressure and cardiac output
2. A pharmaceutical company wants to manufacture Penicillin. Identify the control objective and all the
variables. Discuss the process through a block diagram with control schematics.
3. A process furnace heats a process stream from near ambient temperature to a desired temperature of 300°C.
The process steam outlet temperature is regulated by manipulating the flow rate of fuel gas to the furnace.
Draw the control diagram and identify the following
(a) Objective of the control strategy
(b) Measured output
(c) Manipulated Output
(d) Possible disturbances
(e) Is this a continuous or batch process?
(f) Is this a feed forward or feedback controller?
(g) Should the control valve fail open or fail closed? For the strategy you choose. Is the valve gain positive or
negative? Explain it reason.
(h) Discuss safety, environmental and economic issues.
(i) Draw the control block diagram and level all signals and blocks on the diagram.
