Adjectives Lesson Plan

Overview:
Students will learn about different types of adjectives and how to use them to enhance their descriptive
writing skills. They will demonstrate knowledge of 3 different types of adjectives by constructing
sentences containing a subject, noun, verb, and adjective. Key understandings:
● Adjective is a word that describes a noun
○ Limiting adjective limits attention to one specific noun
○ Comparative adjective compares two or more nouns
○ Superlative adjective describes a noun that is the most of an adjective used to describe it
by adding -est to the end

Objectives and Standards:


The students will:
1. Be able to correctly identify 3 types of adjectives.
2. Be able to distinguish shades of meaning among closely related adjectives.
3. Be able to use adjectives correctly in their writing.
4. Be able to create or select vivid adjectives to enhance their writing as they write and revise.

Standard CCRA.R.4​ Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining
technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning
or tone.

Direction Instruction:
1. During the first part of the lesson we will review the PowerPoint Presentation as a lesson
introduction and answer questions students may have.
2. Have students pass around physical objects (wallet and lacrosse ball) and come up with 3
adjectives that describe the object.

Guided Practice:
1. During the guided practice part of the lesson students will put what they have learned to the test
by writing 6 sentences using adjectives to describe a noun.
● 2 sentences for each of the 3 types of adjective covered in the lesson are required
○ Limiting adjective
○ Comparative adjective
○ Superlative adjective

Check for Understanding:


1. The last piece of the lesson will be a check for understanding where students will read 2 of their
sample sentences out loud to the rest of the class.
2. Hold a discussion for further thoughts and comments.

Required Materials:
● Blank paper
● Wallet
● Squishy ball
● Lacrosse ball
● Inflatable soccer ball
● Ping pong ball
