It’s my house; It’s mine
FORM AND USE
Look at these sentences:
It’s my house.
The house belongs to me.
The house is mine.
POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES
1 These are the possessive adjectives.
my – My shoes are brown.
your – Your bluse is yellow.
his – His sister has high heel.
her – Her boots is very tall.
its – The dog wants its food.
our – Our shoes are great!
their – Their gloves is very hot.
2 We use a possessive adjective before a noun.
It’s my hat.
That’s her belt.
Those are your glasses.
POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS
1 These are the possessive pronouns.
mine – Those sunglasses are mine.
yours – These shirts are yours.
his – The blue tie is his.
hers – The red coat is hers.
ours –Those mittens are ours.
theirs – This suit is theirs.
Note:
We do not use a possessive pronoun for it.
1 We never put a noun after a possessive pronoun.
The dog is mine.
The cat is hers.
The glasses are yours.
2 A possessive pronoun (yours, mine, etc.) replaces a possessive adjective +
noun (your team, my job).
My team is better than yours.
(My team is better than your team.)
Her job is more interesting than mine.
(Her job is more interesting than my job.)
Note:
Do not confuse its and it’s: its is a possessive adjective; it’s = it is or it has.
Can you give the dog its food? It’s hungry.
BELONG TO
We use belong to + an object pronoun.
The dog belongs to me.
The cat belongs to her.
The glasses belong to you.
1 Complete the sentences
Complete the sentences with a possessive adjective (my, you, his, her,
its, our or their).
Examples:
This bicycle belongs to me. This is my bicycle.
These pencils belong to you. These are your pencils.
1 That book belongs to her. That is his book.
2 This apartment belongs to them. This is his apartment.
3 This parrot belongs to me. This is my parrot.
4 These socks belong to him. These are your socks.
5 These shoes belong to me. Those are my shoes.
6 Those shirts belong to her. Those are his shirts.
7 That T-shirt belongs to my uncle. That’s his T-shirt.
8 That camera belongs to my wife. That’s his camera.
9 This dog belongs to my children. This is my dog.
10 That ball belongs to my dog. That’s my ball.
11 This money belongs to you. This is his money.
12 This car belongs to us. This is our car.
13 This park belongs to everyone. This is our park.
14 This motorcycle belongs to Mrs. Thompson. This is their
motorcycle.
15 Those magazines belong to her. Those are his magazines.
16 These glasses belong to me. They are his glasses.
17 Those books belong to my husband. They are her books.
18 This house belongs to my friends. This is her house.
19 That basket belongs to my cat. That is his basket.
