TOM’S TASTING TIPS

STAX BEST
BUY Chardonnay is back. The stigma of those big, buttery over-toasted wines of the 90s has finally faded into distant
memory, with winemakers once again producing beautifully balanced wines which express true Chardonnay fruit.
Chardonnay origins are believed to be from Burgundy in France, where it was affectionately known as White

Burgundy. Thanks to the wine’s richness and elegance, its popularity soon spilled over onto the global stage.
VARIETIES
VARIETIES Champagne winemakers began growing and adding Chardonnay to their sparkling wines and it soon became the
main base for Champagne. In fact, Blanc de Blanc is made entirely of Chardonnay grapes.
Chardonnay is Australia’s most widely planted grape variety and almost every region in Australia produces it. Out of all
the varieties grown, Chardonnay is believed to be the one that most strongly reflects a region’s terroir. The main Australian
Chardonnay regions are found in warm, inland areas like the Murray Darling, Riverland and Riverina. These regions
produce well-priced Chardonnays that typically show tropical and stone fruit characteristics and riper fruit flavours.
South Australia, Adelaide Hills
The higher altitude of the Adelaide Hills means it’s a cooler region, and cool climate Chardonnays reveal a finer
structure and more elegant style. The fruit profile tends to focus on white peach and nectarine. The oak is usually not
very prominent.
Western Australia, Margaret River
Margaret River is Western Australia’s most prominent Chardonnay producing region. In this region, the Chardonnays

This cool climate region produces a very elegant style of Chardonnay that typically shows great acidity balanced with
intense fruit. This elegant style can often be overlooked in wine shows, however some of Australia’s best wines are
VARIETIES VARIETIES made from here, including Penfolds Yattarna and Eileen Hardy. Chances are your favourite Sparkling also comes from
Tassie, with the isle also producing great bubbles, such as Arras, Jansz and Clover Hill to name a few.
Victoria
The Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Geelong regions produce a diverse range of Chardonnay from elegant, cool
climate styles through to big, rich and buttery styles. This diversity really allows the winemaker to express themselves.
New South Wales
NSW has many diverse winegrowing regions, including the Hunter Valley, Tumbarumba, Orange and Mudgee. The Hunter
Valley styles tend to be big and rich with strong oak to support the richer fruit. Meanwhile, cooler regions like Tumbarumba
produce tighter, more elegant, stone fruit dominated styles. Chardonnay really gives the winemaker an opportunity to express
their craftsmanship, and the range of styles currently in production can be quite diverse with refinement happening all the time.
Try a few of these bottles on for size, I am sure you will find a new favourite amongst them.

their fix again. Staying true to the classics that have

kept Neptunes on bucket lists for twenty years, both
new dishes and old favourites make an appearance
on the menu.
The first thing I order is a hot chocolate, which is
served deconstructed, with a glass of chocolate syrup
and hot milk on the side for customers to mix their Claro Lager 24*330ml

espresso. Neptunes also roast their own coffee and

Drop. I also had a fruit smoothie which was deliciously

thick and tasty.
Let’s be honest, I didn’t go there just for their drinks.
Seeing the new venue and trying the food was my
main mission and I was not disappointed. They had
so much to offer! For breakfast you could have an
Hooten Dutch Lager 24*330ml
acai bowl, smashed avocado or hotcakes, and for
lunch and dinner, there’s handmade pasta, wood
fired pizza and sharing plates including steak,
snapper and a Sunday roast. I didn’t know what to
choose, they had everything! $

The acai bowl was particularly good. Topped

with granola, shaved coconut and chia seeds, the
blended purple puree makes a healthy option for
those who also have a sweet tooth. I also tried
the free-range grilled chicken breast with sautéed
mushrooms, which was perfectly cooked, and well
paired with a semi-sweet sauce. The four cheese
arancini with tomato sugo was also nice, the cheese filling oozing out Hahn Super Dry 4.6% 24*330ml
delightfully on the first bite. However, my favourite dish was the Humpty Doo barramundi fillet with Asahi Super Dry 24*330ml

fennel, baby cress salad and a light buttermilk dressing. The barramundi was cooked perfectly, and
paired with a small salad that was both simple and delicious.

This chic, beachy European bistro with stunning views of the ocean and tons of natural light also
manages to pay attention to the tiniest of details. Green luscious plants and the cute little mirrors on the
walls make the café really stand out. Gorgeous tile, funky light fixtures, and picturesque ocean views
make Neptunes new space “the spot” for any occasion. Boasting excellent service, amazing food and
a convenient location - you can’t go wrong with a date at this stellar place.

Bare Naked Bowls has the best acai bowls I have
ever had the pleasure of trying. Their menu is full
of fresh, healthy, filling and incredibly delicious
recipes. They mostly use organic ingredients
along with superfoods like cacao nibs, hemp
seeds, activated buckini and more. Their goal is
to promote an active lifestyle, which is why they
serve food that is delicious and nutritious.
The menu includes eight different acai bowls,
three smoothie bowls, five brekkie bowls, and so
much more to try. Everything you eat from there
contains so much energy you will be ready to
take on the world afterwards. It doesn’t matter if

They also sell protein balls and gluten-free and

Their most popular bowl is the Manly bowl. Made from a blend of organic acai, banana and
strawberry, the thick purple paste is topped with strawberries, blueberries, goji berries, bee pollen
and the most crunchy, sweet granola I have ever tasted. I could have just eaten the granola and been
satisfied with that. Whenever someone new came in, they couldn’t help but drop their jaw at how
glorious and full of color it was.
Alongside the bowls, they also serve four different types of latte and my favorite was the beetroot latte.
The friendly staff ask what kind of milk you want, with options such as homemade cashew milk, almond
and macadamia milk. I was curious as to what it would taste like, as beetroot can sometime have
a pickled taste. Served in a cute, small cup, the latte was a soft pink colour and a pleasantly warm
temperature. The flavour actually really threw me because it wasn’t what I expected it to taste like at all.
It was definitely a good surprise.
Take it from me, don’t leave Bronte without going to Bare Naked Bowls. With healthy recipes that give
you energy, and friendly staff who strive to know your name, you’re guaranteed to leave with a smile on Jack Daniel's 1907 Canadian Club 37%
