Assignment Brief - QCF BTEC

This assignment brief provides tasks for a trainee aeronautical engineer to demonstrate their understanding of the International Standard Atmosphere (ISA), parameters of subsonic airflow over aerofoil sections, and generation of lift. The tasks require explaining the ISA, distinguishing laminar and turbulent flow, defining aerofoil parameters, and discussing how a subsonic aerofoil gains lift. Sources are provided to aid in completing the tasks by the given deadline as part of training at an aircraft manufacturing company.

Assignment title: The ISA and Subsonic Airflow Over Aerofoil Sections.

Purpose
Understand the nature, physical parameters and use of International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) and
subsonic airflow over aerofoil sections.

Scenario
You are newly appointed as a trainee engineer at a big Aircraft Manufacturing Company where manufacturing of
Aircrafts takes place. You are involved with a team dealing with function, construction and operation of aircraft
fuselage, wings and other major aircraft components; to work with the team flawlessly you need to have sound
knowledge about those things and impact of ISA on Aircrafts.

Your Engineering Supervisor advised you to complete the following tasks to judge your capabilities.

Task 1 (a) P1

i) What is ISA? Define the parameters and their standard atmospheric values at sea level according to
ISA.

ii) Discuss how Pressure, Temperature and Density change with Altitude in different atmospheric layers.

iii) What is the purpose of ISA chart?

Task 1 (b) P2

i) Define Laminar and Turbulent flow and distinguish the characteristics between them.

ii) Explain the nature of dynamic and kinematic viscosity of air.

2
Task 1 (c) P3

i) Define all related basic terminologies and parameters of an aerofoil with a suitable hand sketch
diagram.
ii) Discuss how a subsonic aerofoil gains lift.
