S13.9 “AP 11x16 a/b Double-Sided” (D-S) MAPBOARD SELECTION: Ever since the “11x16/Double-Sided”
boards came out in “AP6: A Decade of War”, I have been thinking how these could be incorporated into SASL. At
first I was discouraged, since they seemed too different for SASL’s regimented mapboard generating system.
However these D-S boards were also too interesting to give up so easily (especially since more are coming in future
APs). So after some experimenting, and with these modified rules, I believe that the “Double-Sideds” now have a
place in the SASL system. Currently these rules incorporate 1a/b, 2a/b, 4a/b, and 5a/b. I look forward in the
future to working in 3a/b and 6a/b river boards.
S13.91 D-S PROCEDURE: Follow as per 13.1. If a Double-Sided (D-S) is rolled, the selection is valid only if 2
or more boards are still required. The D-S selection always counts as 2 mapboards for any given Mission.
S13.92 D-S SELECTION PROCESS: The Mapboard selection process (13.2 – 13.2313) is followed normally,
except as modified in the D-S rules below.
S13.921 D-S DETERMINE TERRAIN COLUMN: If D-S boards are selected, the Terrain Column determined
is considered valid for two mapboards.
S13.922 D-S DETERMINE MAPBOARD: D-S boards are designated as #a/#b (i.e. 1a/2b). Note, additional map
identifiers (such as “v”) maybe in front of the map ID. If D-S boards are selected, the selection counts as two
normal “side-by-side” mapboards. Re-roll if only 1 normal mapboard is needed or the terrain is incompatible for the
Mission.
S13.923 D-S MAPBOARD ALIGNMENT: Lay out both D-S selected boards, with one board letter “a” side up,
and the second board with side “b” up. Make an initial random dr to determine which of the two D-S boards will be
on the Northernmost board. A second random dr is then made for each D-S board, to determine if the #-letter
identifier will be oriented towards the FBE or EBE. Finally, if the D-S boards are mating with the long edge of a
normal mapboard, visually identify if the woods half-hexes match. If one (or both) D-S boards do not match, flip
the effected D-S board(s) to their other side, in order to perfectly match the half-hex woods (Note: it is better to have
one board letter “a” side up, and the other with side “b” up, in order to simplify random Letter Chit draws. If both
D-S boards have the same letter up, random Letter Chit draws need a subsequent random dr to determine which
board is selected.). It may not be possible to perfectly match the half-hex woods if normal boards are on both the
FBE and EBE of D-S boards. If this is the case, then A2.3 & A2.4 applies.
S14.6 D-S VPO: Due to the unique orientations of D-S boards, VPOs are determined per “Board Halves” (instead
of per normal board). For VPO purposes, each D-S is divided into two Board Halves: the numbered board half
(noted as “<” in the VPO table) and the non-numbered board half (noted as “>” in the VPO table). If VPOs are to
be selected per the Mission card, the appropriate D-S Board Halves would be used per normal board requiring
VPOs. Also, since each D-S can be oriented “a” or “b” side up, two VPO hexes are listed, separated by an “=” (with
side “a” listed first). VPOs separated by “=” are the same hex/terrain, the only difference is whether the D-S has
side “a” or “b” facing up.
S14.7 D-S SUSPECT (S?) PLACEMENT: Follow S4.1-S4.14 procedures, with each D-S board being treated as
if it was a normal board [EXC: If the D-S board’s east-west alignment is incompatible with S? placement per the
Mission Orders, then use D-S “Board Halves” for S? placement instead. See also S14.6.].
D-S EXAMPLE: Your SASL company mission will be Enemy Offensive – Mission 9. This mission consists of three
“normal” ASL mapboards. The first (FBE) board was determined via table A8e to be Rural, and board 17 was
rolled. The second Terrain Selection on A8e rolled was Village, and a final DR10 followed by dr5 on the modified
A9 table means that the 1a and 2b mapboards were selected. Since these “Double-Sided” boards count as two
boards, no further A8e nor A9 dice rolls are made.
The orientation dr for board 17 is made, and it is determined that its board number will be facing north.
The boards 1a and 2b are now set up. A random dr determines that 1a will be on the south edge. Further random
die rolls has both 1a and 2b board number-letter identifiers facing towards the FBE (west). Visual inspection
shows that both 1a and 2b half-woods hexes match perfectly with board 17, so neither D-S boards need to be
“flipped”.
The VPOs are now determined. For this mission, VPOs are located on the two western/FBE boards.
Therefore board 17 and the western “Board Halves” of 1a/2b will have VPOs. Die rolls for board 17 results in one
VPO in 17C3.
For the 1a/2b FBE halves, 2 VPOs were rolled. The first VPO determination dr is a “3”. Since the FBE
half is the “number-letter identifier” halves for both 1a and 2b, the “1a=1b<” and the “2a=2b<” columns are
used. Looking up dr “3” results in N7=DD7. Since the 1a side is up, the first VPO is 1aN7. The second VPO
determination dr is a “6”. Looking this up in the modified VPO table, the second VPO result is 2bEE5.
There are no S? counters that start on board for this mission, so S14.7 is skipped.
You are now ready to set up and play the rest of your Mission normally.
