INDIRECT QUESTIONS

When we want to be POLITE, we

can add a phrase to the beginning
of the question to make an
indirect question.
a.) The word order
after the added
phrase is the same as
affirmative sentence
with no inversion.
 Where are you
from? (direct) →
 Can you tell me
where you are from?
(indirect)
b.) We DON’T
USE auxiliaries
do /does, etc.
Where do you live
(direct) →
Could you tell me
where you live?
(indirect)
c.)To ask an
indirect yes/no
question, we add
IF
Does he like football?
(direct) →

Do you know if he likes

football?
*We also use phrases like
I’d like to know and I was
wondering to introduce an
indirect question.
These are followed by a full
stop NOT a question mark.
E.g. Is the shop open
now? (direct)→

I’d like to know if the

shop is open now.
d.) We can also make
indirect questions by
adding SURELY to the
start of the sentence.
We do this when we
expect the
other person to agree
or to express surprise.
 Surely the museum
won’t be open this
late in the day?
