Activity: 4.1 Separating the components of a

Aim : 1. To separate a mixture of iron fillings
and sulphur powder.
2. To separate a mixture of sand and
salt.

Procedure:
1. Some iron fillings and sulphur powder is
mixed in a beaker.
2. A magnet is held near the mixture.

Procedure:
1. The mixture of salt and sand is mixed with
some water to dissolve the salt.
2. The sand and salt is separated by using
the following steps:
a. A filter paper is folded into a cone
(figure 4.2).
b. The filter paper is wet before putting it
into the filter funnel. The filter paper is
pressed against the surface of the filter
funnel so that it can stick properly.
c. The mixture is poured into the filter
funnel with the help of filter funnel with
the help of glass rod.
d. The liquid that flows is collected out of
the filter funnel in a beaker.
3. Some of the liquid is poured into an
evaporating dish.
4. The salt solution is heated slowly using the
Bunsen burner.
5. The report is written in my science report
book.
Observation:
1. The salt in the mixture dissolved in the
water.
2. The sand is left on the filter paper.
3. When all the water evaporated, salt was
seen in the evaporating dish.
Conclusion:
A mixture of sand and salt can be separated by
dissolving the salt in water followed by filtration
to obtain the sand and then, evaporation to
obtain the salt.
