Construction Requirementsc
c Moonbuggy deams- eac moonbuggy must be t e
work of a student team of a ig sc ool or an
accredited institution of ig er learning. A group of
ig sc ools may also work in collaboration toward
         building a moonbuggy entry.c
c Propulsion System- uman powered (one or bot
passengers); energy storage devices- suc as
springs, flyw eels or ot ers- are not allowed.c
c Collapsed Dimensions- prior to course testing,
Assembly judging is conducted t e morning of t e
race, prior to t e first run. d e collapsed ve icle
must fit in a volume of maximum dimension 4'x 4'x 4'. dape, strap, or ot er device
can be used to old t e buggy toget er in t e collapsed configuration; owever, all
suc devices must be part of w at is carried (see item 4 below) and any component
not to be part of t e buggy w en racing t e course must be left in t e ³tool area´
following assembly timing A frame of t is dimension will be placed over t e collapsed
moonbuggy for verification. üo contact wit t e buggy by t e team is permitted
    w ile being measuredc
c *eig t- t e ve icle must be lifted and carried 20 feet by t e two passengers,
wit out aid of any sort (e.g., no w eels) in t e unassembled 4'x 4'x 4' volume
    configuration.c
 c Assembled Dimensions- t e maximum widt of t e assembled ve icle, w	!

, is four (4) feet, including w eels. d ere are no constraints for eig t and
    lengt of t e assembled ve icle.c
c Ve icles not constructed by t e entering team are not acceptable. Ve icles t at ave
been previously entered s ould contain major modifications t at attempt to improve
    on design and performance.

c üo constraints are imposed in t e means of contact between t e buggy and t e

    w eels, belts, treads, etc.c
c All parts of t e buggy, including t e seat, steering controls, and peddles, wit w ic
t e riders ave normal contact must be designed suc t at t eir lowest surface must
be at least 15´ (38.1 cm) above t e ground w en t e buggy is at rest on a level
surface and wit riders onboard. In t e case of t e peddles and steering controls,
t at measurement is to be made w en t at part is in t e lowest position possible
    (not w en t e buggy is in t e collapsed configuration).c
c d e ve icle must ave a turning radius of 15 feet or less.c
cFor safety reasons, it is recommended t at t e center of gravity of t e "ve icle plus
passengers" be low enoug to safely andle slopes of 30 degrees front-to-back and
side-to-side. Any moonbuggy ex ibiting andling c aracteristics or ot er ve icle
dynamics t at are deemed unsafe or unstable by t e judges will be disqualified from
t e competition. d is determination will be made by inspection of t e assembled
moonbuggies prior to course testing. Any moonbuggy t at is judged to ave become
unsafe w ile racing or passengers w o are found to be injured or bleeding can be
disqualified from t at race attempt and removed from t e course.c
cEac ve icle must ave seat restraints for eac of t e two passengers. d e restraints
must be worn during runs of t e course.c
cAll s arp edges and protrusions must be eliminated (i.e. padded) or guarded as
    necessary to t e satisfaction of t e judges.c
cd e ve icle must be equipped wit t e following elements: simulated dV camera
    (approximately 2" x 3" x 6"), simulated ig gain antenna (approximately diameter
of reflector: 2'), two simulated batteries (eac approximately 4"x 6"x 8"), moon dust
abatement devices (aka fenders) over eac w eel, simulated electronic controls-
radio and display console (total combined approximate size 1 cubic foot) and national
or institution flag. d ese items will be c ecked prior to, and after, eac course run.c
cBacking up is not required, but may be useful.c
cVe icles t at do not satisfy t e intent of t e moonbuggy competition can be
    disqualified.c
cOnly ve icles registered for t e competition will be allowed in t e pits area.c
cBrakes must be present to insure t e ability to safely stop t e ve icle.c
cProtective equipment and clot ing are be required w en engaged in a construction
activity, like welding, t at requires appropriate protective gearc
Passenger Rulesc
c Moonbuggy Passengers- two (2) student team members (one female and one male)
       must propel t e moonbuggy over t e course.c
c Eye protection (e.g. safety glasses, goggles, or face s ield), ead protection (a
bicycle elmet), and appropriate clot ing must be worn during operation of t e
moonbuggy. S oes are required. Alt oug at t e discretion of adult riders, adult
supervisors, and parents of minors, it is recommended t at clot ing providing some
protection against cuts and abrasion be worn (e.g. long sleeved and long torso
s irts, long pants, and socks).c
c üo appendages suc as stilts may be used on t e feet of t e moonbuggy passengers.c
c Pus ing t e moonbuggy wit a pole or ot er implement is not allowed. A rider¶s use
of t eir ands on t e w eels as wit a w eelc air to rock or ot erwise facilitate
        moving t e moonbuggy is permitted.c
c d e consumption of alco olic beverages or controlled substances by any team
