BGP Connection Process Guide

BGP has several states that define its connection and exchange of routing information with neighboring routers. It begins in an Idle state and attempts to connect by initiating a TCP session. If successful, it moves to the OpenSent state to send an Open message and waits for a response. Upon receiving an Open message, BGP establishes the connection and enters the Established state where routing updates are exchanged.
