Symbolic Interaction Theory

In Education

Symbolic interactionism traces its origins to Max Webers assertion that individual act according to their interpretation of

the meaning of their world.

Its focuses on the way that people interact through symbols: words, gestures, rules, roles. Meanings evolves from their interactions in their environment and with people.

Cont
These interactions are subjectively interpreted through existing symbols.
Understanding these symbols is important in understanding human behavior. Interactions with larger societal processes influence the individual and vice-versa. Thus, symbolic interactionists give serious thought to how people act, and then seek to determine what meanings individuals assign to their own actions and symbols, as well as to those of others.

Five central ideas to symbolic interactionism

1. The human being must be understood as a social person
2. The human being must be understood as a thinking being. 3. Humans do not sense their environment directly, instead, humans define the situation they are in. 4. The cause of human action is the result of what is occuring in our present situation. 5. Human beings are described as active begins in relation to

their environment.

Functionalism Theory
In Education

It has its origins in the works of Emile Durkheim, who was especially interested in how social order is possible or how society remains relatively stable Society as a social system or inter-related parts Society like a human body, education are like important organs that keep the society or body healthy and well

Cont
Emphasizes the consensus and order that exist in society, focusing on social stability and shared public values. When one part of the system is not working or is dysfunctional, it affects all other parts and creates social problems, which leads to social change.
