Abaca Fiber: Uses and Production

Abaca, also known as Manila hemp, is one of the strongest natural fibers. It is produced by cutting abaca stalks into strips, scraping them by hand to remove the pulp, and then washing and drying them. Abaca fiber is composed primarily of cellulose but also contains hemicellulose, lignin, pectin, wax and fat. It is used to make cordage products, pulp and paper, nonwovens like medical gowns and diapers, and handmade crafts including bags, placemats and carpets. Abaca also has potential applications as a construction material in fiberboards and as a fuel.
