Objectives
Understand the main causes of kidney failure that result in the need for a
transplant
Explain the criteria a patient must meet to be eligible for a kidney transplant
Explain the factors that can rule out kidney transplantation
Know the sources of donor kidneys
Main cause of kidney failure resulting in
the need for a kidney transplant
End-stage kidney disease caused by:
Diabetes
High blood pressure or hypertension
Renal artery stenosis
Polycystic kidney disease
Congenital problems in the development of the kidneys
Autoimmune diseases where the immune system fails to recognize the kidney as its
own and attacks it thinking it is a foreign object
Physical injury
Necessary criteria to qualify for kidney
transplant
Donated kidneys are given to patients based on match with the donor
Time spent on the waiting list
Many wait 4-5 years on the list before receiving kidneys
The patient will need to pass a series of tests to qualify such as:
Tissue and blood typing to make sure your body will not reject the donated kidney
Blood tests or skin tests to check for infections
Heart tests such as EKG, echocardiogram, or cardiac catheterization
Tests to look for early cancer
Your place on a waiting list is based on several factors:
They type of kidney problems you have
How severe your heart disease is, and
The likelihood that the transplant will be successful
Factors that can rule out kidney
transplant:
Certain infections, such as TB or bone infections
Problems taking medications several times a day for the rest of your life
Heart, lung, or liver disease
Other life threatening diseases
Recent history of cancer
Infections, such as hepatitis
Current behaviors such as smoking, alcohol or drug abuse, or other risky
lifestyle habits
Sources of donor kidneys
Living related donor related to the patient receiving the transplant
Living unrelated donor Ex: friend or spouse
Deceased donor a person who has recently died and who has no known
chronic kidney disease
A kidney from a diseased donor must be transplanted within 24 to 72 hours after
being removed from the body.
