Cast iron is made by remelting raw iron and steel to remove phosphorus and sulfur, leaving more than 2% carbon and 1% silicon. It is very strong, can be molded into many forms, and resists corrosion. However, it is also brittle with cracks that are difficult to stop, and has less tensile strength than steel. As cookware, cast iron excels at heat diffusion and retention while being non-toxic and developing a non-stick surface at low cost. It is also widely used for pipes and machinery due to its durability, rigidity, abrasion resistance, and ability to be machined without distortion.

What is Cast Iron and how is it Made?
It is made by remelting raw iron scrap iron and steel
Phosphorus and sulfur is removed
Contains more than 2% carbon and 1% silicon
Melted in a blast furnace

Advantages
It is very strong and can be molded into almost any form for
mass production. Also the silicon improves the products
corrosion resistance.

Disadvantages
It is brittle and once a crack begins it is nearly impossible to
stop. It has less tensile strength and shock resistance than
steel.
