A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

 On 28th February Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. was incorporated as a


Public Limited Company under the Companies Act, 1956.
 The company has been set up to take over the management, control and
operation of Delhi Telephone District and Mumbai Telephone District of
the Department of Telecommunications and to plan, establish, develope,
provide, operate and maintain all types of telecommunication.
HISTORY OF TELEPHONE

The word “telephone “ is the combination of two Greek


word “Tele” and “Phone”. ”Tele” means far and “Phone”
means voice and sound.
 In 1874 Alexander graham bell invented the principle
of telephone.

 Research of electronic telephone exchanges was


ultimately perfected in 1960.
 The research on mobile technology begins in 1946.
OBJECTIVES OF MTNL

 To upgrade the quality of telecom services


 To expand telecom
 To raise necessary financial resources
 To provide new telecommunication services, particularly needed by the
business community and public administration such as Cellular Mobile
Radio Telephone, Radio Paging, Facsimile Videotex, Teletex, Electronic
Mail etc.
 To invest in Human Resource Development
 To organize and dovetail the training programmes
MAIN SECTION OF EXCHANGE

Typical exchange contains of :

 Switch room.
 Power plant room.
 Main Distribution Frame(MDF) room
MAIN DISTRIBUTION FRAME

 MDF means Main Distribution Frame.Local cable


contact at MDF.
 All types of cable out to the door, contact connection
at MDF.
The primary function of MDF is to remove fault. It is also
known as Fault Remove Section.
 The telephone numbers are also disconnected in the MDF
because of some specific reason.

ORGANIZATION OF MDF :
Vertical side .
Horizontal side.
RACKS IN MDF ROOM
VERTICAL SIDE

RACK: -On the rack, the tags are situated. One rack is having eight tags. The
counting is done from up (0) to down (7).

TAGS: -Each rack consists of eight tags.


1 tag = 4 core
1 core = 4 bunch
1 bunch = 2 line

N.E.:-The word NE stands for the ‘NUMBER OF EQUIPMENT’.


It is used for testing number and

WEDGE: Wedge is used as a device for checking the ring. Wedge is


placed in jack strips, which is connected to telephone for checking.
HORIZONTAL SIDE

The horizontal side connected to the underground cable.


This cable is having 100 pairs. These pair is distribute.
when we allot the telephone number to the subscriber.

Horizontal side is again subdivided in two parts:

One part is connected with the vertical side.


 Another with the subscriber line by using 100 pair
underground cable.
POWER PLANT

The main parts of power room are :

Batteries.

UPS (Uninterrupted power supply).

 Charging – Discharging room.

Inverter and Converter unit.


SWITCHING ROOM

This is the room where the switching of calls takes place.


 This is the unit responsible for testing the eligibility of
an authorized subscriber.
 This room consists of arrangement of cards in a rack,
this rack has allotted terminals of authorized
subscriber. A card can have 16 connections.
