Direction

The document discusses how to read and understand directions on maps. It explains the compass rose, which indicates north, and can show up to 16 directions. There are three categories of directions: cardinal, which divide the circle into north, south, east, and west; ordinal, which further divide the quadrants; and tertiary, which divide the wedges. Compass bearings assign numbers to each direction, measured clockwise from north in degrees.

READING AND UNDERSTANDING DIRECTION ON MAPS

THE COMPASS ROSE
• A compass rose is an image on a map used to indicate which way is
north.
• Sometimes, this is just an arrow with an N to indicate which way is
north
• Sometimes, the compass rose is more complicated and can show
up to 16 directions
CATEGORIES OF DIRECTIONS

• There are at least three different categories of directions:

Cardinal, Ordinal, and Tertiary directions
CARDINAL DIRECTIONS

• Divide the circle in half vertically,

and again, horizontally. N
• Label the four directions
• These four directions are the
most important directions, with
north being the very most W E
important of all.
• North
• South
• West and East S
ORDINAL DIRECTIONS
N
• Divide each quadrant in half
and label the new directions. NW NE

• These ordinal directions are

the secondary directions.
• They are named by the W E
directions on either side; the
more important name first,
followed by the lesser name. SW SE
S
TERTIARY DIRECTIONS

NNW N NNE

• Finally, divide the wedges in NW NE

half again and label the new WNW ENE
directions.
• The names of the labels follow W E
the same format as for ordinal ESE
WSW
directions.

COMPASS BEARINGS

• Compass bearings are the numbers that 360˚
337.5˚ 22.5˚
correspond to the angle of each N NNE
NNW
directions as measured clockwise in 315˚ 45˚
NW NE
relation to north.
292.5˚ 67.5˚
• The direction “east” is at a 90 degree angle WNW ENE
from the direction “north”, so the bearing
is 90 degrees, or 090
270˚ W E 90˚
• The direction “west” is at a 270 degree
angle from north (remember it is measured ESE
clockwise), so the bearing is 270 degrees, 247.5˚ WSW 112.5
or 270. SW SE ˚
225˚ 135˚
• Calculate the bearing of each of the SSW SSE
directions listed. 202.5˚ S
157.5
180˚ ˚
