HISTORY OF ANDROID

HISTORY OF ANDROID

 AndyRubin – a veteran Apple engineer

who found the software company called
DANGER.
 Rubin formed a new company
focused on developing a platform that
was open to all software designers.
HISTORY OF ANDROID

 Android Inc. – a standalone software company with no

product to sell for two years.
 The
company focused on an open-source evolution of
many of the ideas that started at Danger.
HISTORY OF ANDROID

 Android Inc. partnered by Google

 By the end of 2005, Rubin and his
team (Google) were set up in
offices in Mountain View, Calif.,
hidden away from the world,
while they worked with this new
company to finish this combined
vision.

HISTORY OF ANDROID
(THE MASCOT)

 Android’smascot, affectionately known as Bugdroid, has

become instantly recognizable in the mobile world and it
has already gone several transformations to match the
dessert a given Android version is named after. But
Bugdroid wasn’t the first mascot.
HISTORY OF ANDROID
(THE MASCOT)
HISTORY OF ANDROID
(THE MASCOT)

 Theseloopy-looking robots were. They were created by

Dan Morrill, who worked in developer relations, when he
decided that slides for a presentation to Google’s dev
team needed eye candy.
HISTORY OF ANDROID
(THE MASCOT)

 Thesewere never used officially, but apparently they lived

long enough to pick up a nickname – Dandroids.
 While the Dandroids are not without their charms, I have to
say I’m glad Google went with the Bugdroid design (done
by Irina Blok).
HISTORY OF ANDROID
(THE MASCOT)

 Mr. Morrill isn’t done with the Android trivia. The second
internal developer launch of Android was called R2-D2,
short for Release To Developers 2. Due to trademark
considerations, Android’s naming scheme moved on to
desserts – an idea by Ryan PC Gibson.
HISTORY OF ANDROID
(THE STORY BEHIND THE ANDROID LOGO)

 Irina Blok
 designed the Android Logo
 who was part of the launch
campaign, designed the green
robot. Initially, the logo was
intended to be for developers
only but consumers loved it and
so it became the official logo.
HISTORY OF ANDROID
(THE STORY BEHIND THE ANDROID LOGO)
 There are voices out there that
claim that the design of the
android has been taken from an
old Atari video game called
“Gauntlet: The Third Encounter”.
 Besides that, some claim that the
Android logo was inspired by the
original designs of R2-D2, the
beloved droid from the Star Wars
Saga.
HISTORY OF ANDROID
(THE STORY BEHIND THE ANDROID LOGO)

 Irina
explained, however, that there have been countless
of logo design drafts out of which the Android logo had
been chosen. In fact, the final logo was one of her first
sketches she did.
HISTORY OF ANDROID
(THE STORY BEHIND THE ANDROID LOGO)

 Taking into account that the theme for the logo drafts was
robots and androids and that many initial drafts were
designed I doubt that this green dude completely
originated from the Atari game or from R2-D2. But
everyone has to make his own judgement. You can see the
different approaches Irina took while she was coming up
with designs for the logo.

ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM

 Android is a mobile operating system developed by

Google, based on a modified version of the Linux kernel
and other open source software and designed primarily for
touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and
tablets.
THE FIRST ANDROID PHONE
ANDROID 1.0 (ALPHA)
THE FIRST ANDROID PHONE

 The version history of the Android mobile operating system

began with the public release of the Android beta on
November 5, 2007. The first commercial version, Android
1.0, was released on September 23, 2008.
 Android is continually developed by Google and the Open
Handset Alliance, and it has seen a number of updates to
its base operating system since the initial release.
THE FIRST ANDROID PHONE

 The Android era officially began on October 22nd, 2008,

when the T-Mobile G1 launched in the United States.
Initially, many features that we couldn't live without today
were missing — (an on-screen keyboard, multitouch
capability, and paid apps, for instance) — but the
foundation was in place, and a few lasting trademarks of
the platform debuted on those very first G1s to roll off the
assembly line.
