IP PROTECTION
• IP rating is also known as Ingress Protection or International
Protection ratings which are defined to the international
standard of EN 60529 (British BS EN 60529:1992, European
IEC 60509:1989). These standards are used to define the
levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against
intrusion from foreign bodies such as dirt and water.
• The European standard for enclosures, EN 50298 also includes
IK impact test. This test is described in EN 50102.

IP PROTECTION
• The rating consists of the letters IP followed by 2 digits,
– The first digit stands for the level of protection that the
enclosure provides against solid bodies.
– The second digit describes the degree of protection of the
equipment inside the enclosure against water.
IP65 = First Digit - Solids
IP65 = Second Digit - Liquids

Form 4 Separation of busbars from the functional units, and separation of all functional
units from one another, including the terminals for external conductors which
are an integral part of the functional unit.
Type 1 Terminals for external conductors located in the same compartment
as the associated functional unit. Busbar separation is achieved by
insulated coverings, eg. Sleeving, wrapping or coatings. Cables may
be glanded elsewhere.
Type 2 Terminals for external conductors located in the same compartment
as the associated functional unit. Busbar separation is achieved by
metallic, or non-metallic, rigid barriers, or partitions. Cables may be
glanded elsewhere.
