Welcome
On the eve of
World Environment Day
Theme: Air Pollution
India ranked fourth globally that faces severe
air pollution problem.
Air pollution in India is a serious issue,
ranking higher than smoking, high blood
pressure, child and maternal malnutrition,
and risk factors for diabetes.
At least 140 million people breathe air 10
times or more over the WHO safe
limit and 13 of the world's 20 cities with
the highest annual levels of air pollution
are in India. Air pollution contributes to
the premature deaths of 1.2 million
Indians every year 51.4% were younger
than 70 years old.
Major Reasons for pollution in Delhi
• One of the main reasons of increasing air pollution levels in Delhi is
crop burning by the farmers in states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh
• Pollution caused by the traffic menace in Delhi is another reason
contributing to this air pollution and smog.
• As the winter season sets in, dust particles and pollutants in the air
become unable to move due to stagnant winds resulting in smog
formation
• investment in public transport and infrastructure is low which leads
to congested roads
• Large scale construction in Delhi-NCR is another culprit
• Industrial pollution and garbage dumps are another reasons
Major Reasons for pollution in Haryana
• Construction dust
Connecting Sohna road with Old Gurgaon and NH-8, there are a number
of construction sites on this stretch.
• Burning of waste
Waste burning is a major problem here. Residents claimed 2-3 cases of
waste burning in this area are reported almost every day
Major Reasons for pollution in Haryana
• Vehicular pollution
As it connects Gurgaon to Sohna, Alwar and SPR, heavy vehicles ply on
it day and night, causing vehicular pollution.
• Industry emissions
Spread across an area of 700 acres, this is an industrial hub in the city
with several textile factories, automobile industries, food processing
units and IT firms
Health Risk due to Air pollution
• Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat
• Coughing
• Chest tightness
• Shortness of breath
Environmental Risk due to Air pollution
• Acid Rain
• Eutrophication
• Haze
Occupational Risk due to Air pollution
• Aggravate lung disease causing asthma attacks and
acute bronchitis
• Increase susceptibility to respiratory infections
• Increase in risk of heart attack
Government policies for air pollution
The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act was passed in 1981
to regulate air pollution and there have been some measurable
improvements. However, the 2016 Environmental Performance Index
ranked India 141 out of 180 countries.
In 2015, Government of India, together with IIT Kanpur launched the
National Air Quality Index. It will be rolled out in 102 cities that are
considered to have air quality worse than the National Ambient Air
Quality Standards
Preventive Measures
• Car pooling
• Use bicycles
• Public transport
• More CNG vehicles
• Fuel-efficient cars
• Shared taxis
• Solar power
London
Project- Bio curtains
The architectures of London has developed
revolutionary curtain in which algae cells are passed
in two layers throughout the panel of bioplastic
sheets of curtain. The cyanobacteria eats up carbon
dioxide and releases oxygen voraciously the curtains
takes up very less area and re equivalent to micro
forest being planted.
Italy-Milan
Project-Vertical Forests
High Riser building of Milan are covered
with shrubs and trees which absorbs tons of
carbon dioxide. By 2030 Milan wants to
plant 3 million trees on 10 million square
meters of rooftops. The project aims to
boost Milan’s tree cover by 30% to improve
air quality and to reduce effect of climate
change.
India
Project- Air Ink
The gravinky labs designed air ink
which is formed by the pollution
we are exposed to. The soot of
carbon emission is purified and is
converted into black ink which
can be used to draw, write, paint
and even print
Germany
Project- Hydrogen Powered Train
The project aims to launch train that converts hydrogen and oxygen into
electricity
and emits only steam and water which is better option alternative to
conventional fuel as its cheaper to run
Quieter in operation.
