PhD TOPIC PRESENTATION
SUBJECT: CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
APPLICATION NO:
Previous Research Experience
Anger management among institutionalized elderly women
Cognitive deficits, symptoms and quality of life in chronic
schizophrenia patients with and without metabolic syndrome
TOPICS
1.Neuro cognitive profile and academic
achievement in children with epilepsy
Most common neurological condition in children
Neuro cognitive deficits in general & focal seizures
Illness and the deficits have Impact on child’s cognitive, emotional and
behavioural development
Early language delays Poor verbal learning (spelling & reading) and
verbal reasoning, poor social communication
Poor memory (declarative & procedural) Poor learning of skills and
materials
Reason for choosing the study &
contribution to the area
Academic underachievement can lead to poor social
outcomes and contribute to underemployment or
unemployment in adulthood.
So it is important to regularly assess the child's academic
functioning and school performance to identify those at risk
for problems of learning disabilities and social problems
Interventions based on assessment findings to help
maximize child’s academic success
Attention problems can be targeted for better learning
Identification of any memory deficits……. alternate teaching
strategies with emphasis on compensatory mechanisms to
minimize the long-term impact of memory problems.
2. Parenting style, psychiatric comorbidity and
quality of life in children with chronic physical
illness
Parents: the main source of emotional support for the
child and the most important link between the child and
health care team
Active attitude of parents to illness and altered way of
life determines coping of the child
Reason for choosing the study & contribution to
the area
Parenting style: contradictory evidence
Some chronic physical illness is directly related to
psychiatric diagnosis and poorer QoL in adults
Also the interaction of variables
To decide whether psychological interventions of such
children should have same/ different approach
Family interventions with focus on parenting style to
reduce the psychiatric symptoms
Thus to have better QoL which is the most important
treatment goal for children
3. Neuro cognitive functioning and psychiatric
comorbidity in children with very low birth
weight and /or born very preterm
4 to 7% of live births in India is VLBW
Mortality and neonatal morbidity rates decreased significantly, but
continue to be at significant risk for cognitive impairments
Impaired learning, visuo perceptual skills, performance intelligence,
attention and executive functions. Also at risk for ADHD, anxiety etc.
So need to be closely monitored throughout childhood.
Few studies in India
Skills acquired/courses and programmes
