INTRODUCTION
What is dance?
It is the movement of the body
in a rhythmic way, usually to
music and within a given space
for the purpose of expressing an
idea or emotion, releasing
energy, or simply taking delight
in the movement.

Broad Definition of Dance:
• Aristotle's statement in the
Poetics that dance is rhythmic
movement whose purpose is “to
represent men's characters as
well as what they do and suffer”
refers to the central role that
dance played in classical Greek
theatre.

• The English ballet master John
Weaver said that, “Dancing is
an elegant, and regular
movement, harmoniously
composed of beautiful
attitudes and contrasted
graceful postureof the body
and parts thereof.
Broad Definition of Dance:
• John Martin, the 20th century dance critic
said that, “At the root of all these varied
manifestations of dancing, lies the common
impulse to resort to movement to
externalise states which we cannot
externalise by ratinal means. This is basic
dance.
Basically, all dance movements can be
labelled as locomotor (movements that
travels) or nonlocomotor (movements that do
not change location).
Three Main Forms:
– ceremonial
(religion,
celebration, ritual)
– recreational (folk,
social dancing,
aerobic dance)
– artistic (ballet,
modern, narrative,
tap, lyrical).
Universal Definition of Dance:
• Dance is an art form
or activity that
utilizes the body and
the range of
movement of which
the body is capable.
Basic motives:
self-expression
and physical
release
Health Benefits of Dancing:
• Improved condition of your heart and lungs
• Increased muscular strength, endurance and
motor fitness
• Weight management
• Stronger bones and reduced risk of
osteoporosis
• Better coordination, agility and flexibility.
Health Benefits of Dancing:
• Improved balance and spatial awareness
• Increased physical confidence
• Improved mental functioning
• Improved general and psychological well-
being
• greater self-confidence, self-esteem and
better social skills.
