El Nino: Ronn Matthew Capilit Patrick James Verroya

El Niño is a warming of the Pacific Ocean that disrupts weather patterns globally. It occurs when trade winds weaken, allowing warm water from the western Pacific to shift east. This impacts temperatures, rainfall, and marine life around the world. Some key effects include drought in parts of Asia and North America, heavier than normal rains in usually dry regions of South America, and damage to agriculture and economies. Predicting and understanding El Niño events has improved since the strong 1982-83 event through increased research funding and emphasis on preparation.

El Nino

What is El Niño?

Definition – A warm current of

water
El Nino is the exact opposite of La
Nina
A disruption of the ocean-
atmosphere system in the tropical
Pacific having important
consequences in weather around
the globe.
DK
 ElNino is a seasonal warming of
the Pacific Ocean that upsets
normal weather patterns and is
causing droughts in
Northern Philippines.
 ElNino means “Little boy” while
La Lina Means “Little girl”
The Consequences of
El Niño
 Affects the Economy
 Marine life is reduced
 Drought (Increase in rainfall in some
area)

DK
Normal Conditions

 Trade winds blow west across

the tropical pacific that pile up
warm surface water in the west
pacific so the sea surface is
about a half meter higher at
Indonesia than Ecuador.
 Wateris 8 degrees C warmer in
the western pacific waters.

DK
El Niño Conditions

 Tradewinds are weakened which

allows the warmer western pacific
waters to move east and reach the
South American coasts which makes
the thermocline (layer between
surface water and deep water)
deeper.
 This
makes it so the nutrient rich
waters on the coasts are depleted by
the warmer waters because the
thermocline is deeper.

 Drought
 Shortage of water
 Can cause some disease
WEATHER AND CLIMATE
 The first signs of El Nino
are the unusual warming
of the water in the
Pacific Ocean.
 The warming is caused
by trade winds blowing
from East to West.
