So, we people every day keep on
browsing the net or hunting the media for the news. News is in fact a zest and quest creator.
The letters of the term-NEWS do represent the four directions-North For West and South. And, the report
collected from any of these direction is the news. In fact, the report or information on the incidents,
accident plans, programs or odds; evens etc. collected from any of the four sides is called the news. But at
the same time, all the trifle events or every day ordinary happenings don't make news. Only interesting and
uncommon events make the news. The news broadcast in media is called the news bulletin.
Let's take a look at how the professional experts give their opinion on what news in fact is.
* If a dog bites a man, it is not news but if a man bites a dog, it is news. by- Charles A Dan
News is anything you didn't know yesterday. Turner Catledge
News is the timely report of events, facts or opinions that interests for significant number of people.
William Riwarsa
News is news when it is new. - M.V. Kamath
News may be defined as an accurate, unbiased account of the significant fact of a timely happening that is
of interest to the readers of the newspapers. ----William Mollsby
From the afore-stated definitions, we can conclude that news is the timely report of events, incidents,
accidents, plans, programs and opinion that generate a kind of interest and curiosity to general mass of
people. It is the piece of information about the rises and falls of the governments, wars, human
achievements and so on. In short, news is a distinct, original, thrilling, curious and humorous report that is
apt to be publicly talked about.
• Here are the major parts of a news story:
• Headline:
• The purpose of any newspaper headline is to grab the readers' attention and brief the
contents of the news story.
• News headlines often consist of nouns and verbs. They do not need to be sentences.
• Generally the first letter in the first word of the headline is capital, and all other words in the
headline are lowercase, except for proper names.
• Headlines can contain punctuation, but a full stop should never end a headline.
• Teen returns home to find village buried
• Damage highlighted from Indian floods
• Auto Fair begins in Hetauda
• Twelve killed in bus accident
• Submerged Manila faces disease threat
• Five more die in winter related cases
• Avoid giving your own judgement and opinions but you can raise
important issues and leave the decision to be made by the readers.
• Do not attack a person or label allegations unless you are sure and it is
unavoidable. The report should be fair.
• Be grammatically correct and simple in language.
• Remember passive voice is more frequent in news story writing.
• Connect the points given in the outlines as naturally as possible.
• Quote the sentences by the source using inverted commas.
• The information and analysis should be actual and accurate.
• Be brief.
• First Paragraph or lead paragraph:
• When writing a news story and article, there are five questions that ultimately need to
be answered 'who', 'what', 'when', 'where' and 'why'. The first four are generally given in
the first or lead paragraph while the "why' is generally addressed in the mid paragraphs.
• The first paragraph should grab the reader's attention and make them want to know
more. It includes the most important bit of information in the news article.
• Mid or Body Paragraphs :
• Mid paragraphs explain the first paragraph in detail and provide information from
primary resources such as interviews, quotes, statistics, and document citation.
• Last Paragraph :
• The last paragraph should give a good summary and ending to the news story. Use a
quote or a catchy phrase to make good impression on readers. Like essays and
paragraphs, don't use the expressions like 'In conclusion', To finish', 'At last', etc
Writing a news story:
The question on newspaper story is of 6 marks in the SEE examination. Generally a news story has the
following parts:
Headline : Your headline for the news story must be attractive and eye-catching.
Source : The source must be clearly written i.e. who gave you or where did you get the story from?
Place : The name of the place, where the story occurred or is filed from, must be written.
Date : You must mention the date of your story.
Body : The first sentence of the body generally describes the headline. Other sentences must give
the background and detail for the headline. The language must be simple and grammatically correct.
Useful Tips for writing News Reports :
• Go through the given outlines very carefully and try to understand events, message or information
clearly.
• Give the news report a headline like "Seven Dies in a Bus Mishap". Sometimes the headline may be
given at the top of the clues.
• Mention the location/ place from where you get the report, then date and source (dateline). If these
are not given in the outlines, point them out with imagination.
• Start your report cautiously and remember that the first sentence of the report should give a clear idea
to the reader what the news is about.
•Read these sample news stories:
Headline: Children Escaped Serious Injury
Source: By Reema Singh
Place and date: New Delhi, June 20:
Introduction: More than 30 children escaped serious injury when a school
bus crashed in Delhi today, reported by the local traffic police
inspector.
Explanation: The 36-seater bus, which was carrying children to Delhi Public
School, ran off Potala Road. It narrowly missed an electricity pole
and came to rest with most of its windows smashed in a garden.
Eye-witnesses said the children were helped from the bus
Additional: screaming and shouting and in a state of panic.
Although none of the children was seriously hurt, some of them
were grazed jumping out of the bus and some of them had small
cuts in their body. A pedestrian said, "There should be a good traffic
rule for school buses in town."
• Write a headline.
• Your headline should be accurate, clear, and easy to understand.
• Use key words from the story and keep it straight and plain.
• Use active and short action verbs in your headline. The headline should
accurately lead readers to what the report is about.
• The headline should be attention grabbing, but not exaggerate or mislead.
• Capitalize the first word of the headline and any proper nouns after that.
• If you're having trouble coming up with a headline, you might try writing it last
instead. It may be easier to think of a headline after you've finished your article.
• For example, your headline might read: "Armed robbery at Portland farmer's
market"
• Writing the News Report Headline:
Source
Write a byline and place line. The byline goes directly
underneath the headline. This is where you put your
name and clarify who you are. The place line is where the
article takes place and is written in all caps. Use AP Style
state abbreviations.
An example of a byline: Sue Smith, Staff Reporter
An example of a place line: EUGENE, ORE.[6]
Collecting Information of the Report
The first 2/3 lines or the 1st paragraph of the news is
called the intro/lead. It does give the entire gist or the
summary of the story. Therefore, it is one of the crucial
parts of the news.
Write the body of your report. Body paragraphs explain the lead in greater detail telling about
“5whs “and provide information from primary resources such as quote, statics, comments,
and document citation. This is going to consist of the facts, but more detailed and specific
than in your lead. Use the information you collected and gathered at the scene and in
interviews. Write your report in third person and from a neutral perspective. Make sure your
story conveys information and not an opinion.
Include quotes in the news report. Quotes can be included in your news
report to convey information. Always introduce who you are quoting
followed by the exact words that they said. Use their full name the first time
you mention them then only use their last name.
For example: Mary Quibble has been the director of the children's theater
for six years. “I love the children and how much they care about these
performances,” Quibble said. “There are 76 kids in the programs. They
range in age from 7 to 16 years old.”
Always include attributions. Unless the
information is common knowledge, always
attribute where you got it. You can get in trouble for not giving credit to
someone. This is also important in case a fact is wrong, then it will be
known who got the fact wrong and that it was not you.
For example: The woman ran out of the house at 11 p.m. when she heard
the burglar enter, police said.
