BRTA
INTRODUCTION
Was established in 1983, started functionally since January 1988
Is controlling and managing the transport sector of Bangladesh
Maintaining road safety as well
Works under the ministry of communication
Number of circles under the purview of BRTA is 62 (57 district circles and five
metro circles)

Qualitative analysis was based on in-depth interviews and unstructured phone
interviews
In-depth interview lasted for 1-2 hour for each department, consisted of 1-2
personnel

FINDINGS OF THE REPORT
• A service recipient has to pay up to tk 50,000 as bribe during
registration
• Reveals that about 61% drivers got license without appearing
driving test
• Bribe paid for driving license varies from tk 100 to tk 7,000

• 54% drivers are running vehicles with their expired licenses
• Vehicle operators are extracting up to 75% extra fare from
passengers in Dhaka
• No effective supervision, monitoring from BRTA staff
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Keep seating bus service in different areas
• Bus owners announced the closure of buses in the on April 19
• The commission recommended 26 disciplines for city transport
• Introduction of new two-lane buses through BRTC
• Introduction of BRTC bus leasing system and management of bus service.
