Catholic Sacraments Guide

The three sacraments of initiation in the Catholic Church are Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. They incorporate believers into the Church and bring them to full communion. Baptism removes original sin and makes one a child of God. Confirmation strengthens the faith with gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Eucharist is considered the highest sacrament, where believers receive the true body and blood of Christ in communion.

SACRAMENTS
OF INITIATION
BAPTISM, HOLY EUCHARIST AND
CONFIRMATION
SACRAMENTS OF
INITIATION
When Jesus established the Church, He wants each of
us to be totally connected with her.
Jesus wants us to be brought towards salvation and
fullness of life
As part of our incorporation in the Church
established
by Jesus, the Sacrament of Initiation was
established.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
BAPTISM
• The primary Sacrament a Catholic should undergo
• This is known as the “gateway of all the Sacraments” because it opens us the
privilege to receive the other Sacraments
• The Sacrament of Baptism was instituted by Christ when He sanctified or make
holy the waters of Jordan and gave the instruction to His disciples of making
more followers by Baptizing them with Water in the name of the Most Holy
Trinity.
• The Effects of the Sacraments of Baptism are the following: Being a Child of God,
remission of Original Sin and incorporation of the Church and other Sacraments
• Child of God is being like Jesus who is Son of the Father so we become adopted
sons and daughters of the heavenly Father
BAPTISM
• Original Sin became into existence during the disobedience of Adam
and Eve
• Through Baptism we are washed from the grasp of sin and brought
into life with Jesus Christ
• Baptism may either be pouring/ sprinkling or immersing in water
• Baptism has an “inedible mark or character” which means the
identity of Baptism will never be taken away from the Baptized Person
even by the presence of Sin
MATTER AND FORM
The Form is the words: Profession of Faith and the words (Name of the
Candidate), I baptize you in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
The ordinary action of Baptism is with water but in case there is no
availability of water the following may be considered:
• Baptism by desire- the will of the person to be in the Church will be
considered a solid manifestation of Christian faith
• Baptism by blood- a person was made as a martyr of the Faith
MINISTER OF THE SACRAMENT OF
INITIATION
Everyone can Baptize in the case
of the emergency of dying.

This is called Emergency

Baptism.
What to do in Emergency Baptism
•In case there is a dying person who wants to be baptized and a priest or deacon is not
around the person can immediately administer emergency Baptism.
•The person who will administer the Sacrament should look for water and pour or
sprinkle it to the dying candidate for Baptism
•If the head is fragile, any part of the body will do. The person may administer even just
a drop of water.
•The one who will administer should do this with the intention of incorporating the
person into the Church
•The administering person should inform the Parish Priest near the place about the
Sacrament of Baptism
•In the Baptismal Certificate, the name of the Parish Priest will appear on the
document

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
Sacrament of Conformation
• The Sacrament of Confirmation is a solemn ritual of Faith in the Church
• Most of us were baptized as an infant and this Sacrament confirms to
the person the professed faith as an adult
• The Sacrament of Confirmation fills the candidate with the presence
and gifts of the Holy Spirit for the strengthening of Christian Living
• Usually, the Sacrament is done at the age where the candidate is
capable of reasoning
• The Sacrament also has an “inedible mark” where the person who
received the Sacrament will have a Christian mark on his or her soul
MATTER AND FORM
• The Matter is the application of Chrism Oil on the
head of the Candidate and the Laying on of hands
• The Form is the prayer of the Sacrament of
Confirmation and the words:
(Name of the Candidate) Be sealed with the gift of
the Holy Spirit
ORDINARY MINISTER: The Bishops and the Priests gave
faculty by the Bishop
SACRAMENT OF THE HOLY
EUCHARIST
THE HOLY EUCHARIST
• This is considered as the highest among all the Sacraments
• The word came from the Greek Word “Eukaristein” which means Thanksgiving. Every
time we attend the Mass we offer our “Thanksgiving” to God
• The faithful receive the real and true Flesh and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist
• It is Jesus who claimed that the bread is His body and the wine is His blood
• Jesus also gave the command that this should be celebrated in his memory
• The bread and wine after the consecration prayer becomes the real presence of
Jesus
• This Sacrament is very necessary for our salvation
• Jesus continues to offer his life in the Eucharist for our spiritual nourishment
MATTER AND FORM
• The matter is unleavened bread and pure grape Mass wine
• The forms are the consecration prayer and the words of Jesus
“Take this all of you and of it. For this is my Body which will be given up, for you!”
“Take this all of you and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the
blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for
many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me”
