GOVERNMENT POLICIES FOR EXPANDING

THE USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN INDIA

AND OUR OPINION

“……the time is running out…soon, there will be

nothing left to burn on earth but earth itself…”

OVERVIEW OF ENERGY PROFILE IN INDIA:
(Setting the scenes)

• India , home of 18% of world’s population , has an energy

requirement proportional to it i.e. it consumes 6% of world’s
primary energy.
• India consumes 3.7% of the world’s commercial energy making
it the 5th largest consumer of energy globally.
• Per capita electricity consumption: 600 kWh per
year.
• In 2013, India’s net import was nearly 144 million tons of crude
oil ,16 mton of LNG and 95 mton of coal totalling to 255 mton of
primary energy which is equal to 42% of total energy
consumption , which is further expected to exceed till
53% till 2030.
MINISTRY OF NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY

The name suggest the motive of the ministry “to explore and
implement the non-conventional sources of energy in better
prospects”.

MNRE work in five area -

1. Grid-interactive renewable power (wind power , small hydro
power, solar power).
2. Distributed renewable power (biomass , waste energy, aero
generator /hybrid system).
3. Decentralized energy system (family type biogas plant, solar
street lamp, home lighting system , solar photovoltaic system
and wind pump).
4. Remote village electrification.
5. Other program (energy park , akshay urja and hybrid car).
Share of energy sources in
total
consumption Expected share of resources till
2040
(here we are…&…deeper to dig in terms of
renewable energy resources)
HYDRO POWER:
• Although the capacity has been gradually increased but the contribution
of hydropower to Indian power generation has been continuously declining
in recent decades.
• In 1980, hydropower shared 40% of total power generation which on turned
diminished to 13% in 2013.
• It is unfortunate to say but we have used a little quarter of economically
feasible hydropower energy which could have better prospects in balancing
the power system according to its potential.

Government Working Policies:

• Ensuring targeted capacity with increase of 75% incoming plan.
• Strengthening PSU’s.
• Taking up new project like 800 MW power station of NTPC-Koldam and
530 MW power station of NTPC Parbati .
• 16 hydel power plants under construction in north- east India.
• Increasing private investment.
Opinion to tackle -

• Water sharing disputes between the states has been major obstacle
for the project to hit the requirement .So, it is better to handle
those disputes efficiently and provide a better public acceptance
of hydro power development.

• During the past 5 years hydro power development has prompted a major
blameful debate for severity of flooding which causes inefficiency of
those plants hence , before implementing the project , cumulative
social and environmental impacts must be studied.

• More run of river projects should be implemented as it avoid expensive

reservoirs and can thereby ease the need for resettlement and build up
the public acceptance.
WIND ENERGY
IMPACT OF PRESENT GOVERNMENT POLICIES :

• Wind energy assessment is being carried out by IITM and CWET establishment of
1150 wind monitoring station.
• India’s current installed wind capacity is 8.7 GW (approx. 10% of the world’s total
installed capacity).
• Capacity growth has been strong with a 22% CAGR over last decade.
• Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra & Karnataka are the leaders in wind capacity.
• India is 4th largest producer of wind energy.

OPINIONS TO PACE UP:

• Proper agreement on an appropriate framework of power purchases by
distribution utilities must be accomplished for speed growth of wind
energy.

• Problems of land purchases can be resolved by building wind towers on existing

farmland by allowing farmers to raise additional income.

• Large scale development of wind power offers the potential to expertise and
develop an industry that can deliver well economic and accountable services.
SOLAR ENERGY
WHOLE AND SOLE OF GOVERNMENT POLICIES FOR SOLAR BUILD UP

The enhancement in national solar energy is mainly being leaded under

the head of JNNSM( Jawaharlal Nehru solar mission ),which is a planned
sectional program for promoting the solar mission.
The same program is also concerned with integration of other renewable
energy technologies like biomass and wind with solar energy option.
The above program is functioning with a definite target to be achieved
via two routes i.e. solar thermal and photovoltaic.
OPINION
Solar power is at heart of India’s push towards low carbon energy
sources.
Solar energy being platform independent and a substantial form of
energy development and upliftment of which can be achieved in any
part of the country specially the western and the southern part.
The Indian government should promote the major solar energy plant in
a way to balance the increasing needs of coal and oils at the barren
land as much as possible which in terms lead the country economy as
the barren land will start supporting the production and major energy
consumption is also fulfilled. In this way the largest democratic country
of the world will witness a dual strength in economic development.

Same is the Gujarat which is performing flag holding state of India in

terms of solar energy production , others states should also come in
figure with better plan and progressing future prospects.
YET MORE TO BE DONE…
India is not yet the figure among the crowd of nations which are extensively using
Renewable source of energies like geothermal energy , tidal energy , bioenergy.
In spite of having the longest coastline of the world we are lagging behind to have
Better technical prospects to get complete use of tidal energy.

The equally available form of energy

In the world , the warmth of the earth
core is not yet taking a better part in
energy profile where we see India
trapped at somewhere near zero in
comparison with countries like New
Zealand, Mexico , Indonesia and far
behind USA.

OPINIONS:
A lot of technical reforms is required to uplift these kind of resources to take part in
National energy profile which can only be attained by producing technocrats in these
fields . hence, the only way out I see is including these in course structures of
growing human resource institute. Then only a global level of well
balanced energy profile of India will come into picture.
HENCE THE MOST ECONOMIC AND GRACEFUL WAYS IN WHICH INDIA CAN
FIGHT BACK WITH THE FOLLOWING PERTANING PROBLEMS :-

• Power shortage
• Rising Prices of Oils & Gases
• Ecological Hazards
• Insufficient resources
• Unavailability of sites
• Unequal power distribution
• Limited financing options

ARE, THE AMPLE UPLIFTMENT OF RENEWABLE RESOURCES WHICH IN TERMS

MAKE INDIA A WELL ORGANISED COUNTRY IN TERMS OF BETTER ENERGY
PROFILE AND WILL LEAD INDIAN FLAG AT A REMARKABLE POSITION ON THE
GLOBE TO ATTAIN THE INCRESASING ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN BEST WAY
POSSIBLE WHICH CAN BE FULFILLED BY THE OPINIONS WE HAVE DISCUSSED.
