What is Soil

Soil is a mixture of organic matter,

minerals, gases, liquids, and
organisms that together support life.
Soil
There are six main types of soil: The three
most recognized are sand, silt, and clay. The
best soil for most plants to ensure optimum
growth is a rich, sandy loam. This soil is an
even mixture of all three main types of soil. In
most cases, you'll need to amend the soil
with compos
Soil Types

There are six main soil types:

Clay.
Sandy.
Silty.
Peaty.
Chalky.
Loamy.
Importance of Knowing Soil Type
Knowing whether your soil type is
clay, sand, silt, loam, peat or chalk
will help you choose the right plants
for your garden and maintain them in
good health.
Soil Identification
Silt Soil:
Silt is granular material of a size
between sand and clay, whose mineral
origin is quartz and feldspar. Silt may
occur as a soil (often mixed with sand
or clay) or as sediment mixed in
suspension with water (also known as
a suspended load) and soil in a body
of water such as a river.
Sandy Soil

Sandy Soil is light, warm, dry and tend to be

acidic and low in nutrients. Sandy soils are
often known as light soils due to their high
proportion of sand and little clay (clay weighs
more than sand). These soils have quick
water drainage and are easy to work with
Clay Soil

Clay soil is soil that is comprised of very fine

mineral particles and not much organic
material. The resulting soil is quite sticky since
there is not much space between the mineral
particles, and it does not drain well at all.
Loam soil
Loam is soil composed mostly of
sand (particle size > 63 micrometers
(0.0025 in)), silt (particle size > 2
micrometers (7.9×10−5 in)), and a
smaller amount of clay (particle size <
2 micrometers (7.9×10−5 in)). By
weight, its mineral composition is
about 40–40–20% concentration of
sand–silt–clay, respectively.
Peat Soil

Peat is a type of soil made up of

waterlogged partially-decomposed
plant material including sphagnum
moss and other acid-loving plants,
which has built up over something
like 10,000 years in poorly-drained
wetland habitats.
Chalk Soil

Chalky soils can be identified by:

Chalky or lime-rich soils may be light or
heavy but are largely made up of
calcium carbonate and are very alkaline
(they have a pH of 7.1-8.0) If soil froths
when placed in a jar of vinegar, then it
contains free calcium carbonate (chalk)
or limestone and is lime rich.
Ideal Soil Mix for Plants

The ideal blend of soil for plant

growth is called loam. Often referred
to as topsoil or black dirt by
landscape companies, loam is a
mixture of sand, clay, and silt.
