What is Health?
It carries the mandate that health is a basic
human right.

It is seen as a spectrum or a continuum

• The modern concept of health refers to
Optimum Level of Functioning (OLOF) of
individuals, families, and communities, which
is influenced by the ecosystem through a
myriad

of factors. 2
2. What Is Health?

A state of complete
physical, mental,
and social well-
being and not
merely the absence
of disease and
infirmity (WHO,
1995).

The 3 Broad Concepts
1. What is a community?
– a group of people with
common characteristics or
interests living together within
a territory or geographical
boundary

–  place where people under

usual conditions are found

– The community is the object

or focus of care in CHN, with
the family as the unit of
service.

of human responses to actual
or potential health problems

Concepts on Community Health
Nursing:
 Concept of optimum level of
functioning

05/10/2021 8
Optimum level of functioning (OLOF) is considered
by many determinates of health OLOF is the best
possible functioning. Taking all things into
account. The concept of OLOF emphasizes an
individual’s abilities is analogues to high-level
wellness. Few of us may be without some so
called disability because we need the glasses; we
have some allergies, emotional problems or some
kind of non infections conditions. The important
aspects neither is nor weather we have such
conditions but, rather what we do with or without
them. on the basis of this , we can assess the
0LOF that he strives to attain and maintain.
• thus individual, families and community have
strengths and weakness , abilities and
disabilities , and an OLOF is affects by various
determinates , hence health on an individual’s ,
family should be looked in accordance with.
DETERMINATES
1. Environments determinates
2. Political system
3. Biological determinates
4. Socio economic determinates
1. Environments determinates
environments has direct impact on the health of
an individual’s, family or community . Both
internal or external and physical. environmental
pollution has become a global threat . we must
find the ways to reduce and manage the pollution
as well as waste. It is worth maintaining that the
Florence nightangle had also given importance to
environmental factor is the maintains of the
health and care of the sick , air Water noise,
radiation. Housing, Waste management etc.
2.POLLITICAL SYSTEM- Political system has a
great effect on the social climate in which we live .
political influence have the power and authority is
regulate much of our surroundings in which, health
care is also included . implementation of any health
programme cannot be conducted properly without
the strong political will. In our country health is the
subject of concurrent list
So there is the need of coordination between the union
and state government in the health related matters.
Social political environments , environments
economic developments , law and order , regulation
of public health laws etc. Are directly concerned with
the health and optimum level of functioning
3.BIOLOGICAL DETERMINATES- Heredity and
genetic determinates have remarkable influence on
the physial and mental health of the individuals/
families. Boundaries of abilities and protection set
by heredity or genetic heritage are often less
modifiable than other disease i. E. Mental
retardation ,metabolic disorder , chromosomal
abnormalities, some cases of disabilities etc. Have
genetic origin . community health nurses have
responsibility to provide proper genetic counselling
to people who are at risk of having biologically
genetically impaired children.
4.BEHAVIORAL DETERMINATES-
Health is the mirror of a person’s lifestyle because
faulty and ill habits have the adverse effect on the
health of the individual . it is an established fact that
culture and ethnic heritage shape much of our life
style including the health care.Risk taking mirror
behaviour based on the carelessness or often
erroneous belief that nothing will happen , influence
people’s health. For example , smoking , avoiding
exercise , lack of sleep , eating too much or
inadequate nutrition, not using helmets or seat belts ,
irregular life pattern.etc. adverse affect our health .
thus community health nurses must be
knowledgeable about patients or individuals
behaviour pattern to improve their health status.
• 5. SOCIOECONOMIC DETERMINATES-
Socioeconomic conditions have the major
impact on the health the major impact on the
health status of any country education, economy ,
occupational opportunities , housing, nutritional
level, per capita income , GDP etc. Determine the
health care system and health system and
resources .Enough monetary help can eliminate the
various illness and the health hazards in the society
adequate employment avenues , decent and
consistent wages can fulfilment most of the
educational , medical , social and environment
needs of the people , although some complex
socioeconomic problems require multi solution
approach
