Jpeg-Ls: Akshit Chheda (1891004) Jaladhi Sonagara (1991106)

JPEG-LS is a lossless/near-lossless image compression standard that consists of two main stages: modelling and encoding. It divides the compression process into spatial pixel prediction and entropy coding phases, using contexts in both phases. The core is based on the LOCO-I algorithm which relies on prediction, residual modelling, and context-based coding of the residuals. JPEG-LS also provides a lossy mode where the maximum error is controlled by the encoder. The main advantage of JPEG-LS is its low complexity.

JPEG-LS
• JPEG-LS is a simple and efficient algorithm that mainly consists of two stages modelling
and encoding.
• it divides the whole compression process in two phases of spatial pixel prediction and
entropy coding and uses contexts in the first as well as the second phase.
• JPEG-LS is a lossless/near-lossless compression standard for continuous-tone images.
• It is a simple and efficient baseline algorithm which consists of two independent and distinct
stages called modelling and encoding.
Lossy Lossless

• Data is lost in compression/decompression • No data loss in compression/decompression

process process
• Data may be changed • Data is never changed
• Decoder can’t give back exactly same data • Decoder gives back exactly same data
• Lost data is unrecoverable . • Lost data is recoverable.
JPEG-LS
• The core of JPEG-LS is based on the LOCO-I algorithm, that relies on prediction, residual
modelling and context-based coding of the residuals.
• Besides lossless compression, JPEG-LS also provides a lossy mode ("near-lossless") where
the maximum absolute error can be controlled by the encoder.
• Main Advantage: Low complexity!
