Guideline For Prescription.
Hand and Wrist Orthoses
• Assistive Orthoses
• Substitutive orthoses
• Protective Orthoses
• Corrective Orthoses
Assistive Orthoses
Basic Opponens Orthoses
• Keeps the thumb pad beneath the palmar surface
index and middle finger
• Palmar prehension
• Dorsal and palmar bars support transverse arch of the hand
• Indicated for patient with medial nerve neuropathy who is
susceptible for developing thenar contracture
• A forearm bar may included to control the drop of wrist in palmar
flexion
Assistive Orthoses
Metacarpophalangeal Extension
• Resist metacarpophalangeal hyperextension
• Indicated for patient with ulnar nerve or combined ulnar and median
neuropathy
• Protection from claw hand
Assistive Orthoses
• Wrist hand Orthoses WHO or Cockup Splint
• Prevent from wrist Flexion (wrist drop)
• Indicated for Radial nerve injury
• Keeps the wrist in normal position
• Protection form repetitive strain as in keyboard operators
Substitutive orthoses
Wrist-driven Prehension Orthoses
• Indicated for C6 tetraplegia
• When wrist is extended the finger approach the thumb
to grasp.
• A locking mechanism relieve stress on wrist extensor
• Can we wear only on the hand is pronated
• Can be adjustable according to size of grasp
• For a patient with weak extensor (c4, c5) prescribed Electrical driven
prehension orthoses WHO
Substitutive orthoses
Utensil Orthoses
• Consisting of spring or elastic webbing around palm.
• The pocket is also called universal cuff.
• May have forearm bar to achieve more functional position of wrist.
•
Protective Orthoses
• Customer design made of plaster of Paris or plastic sheet also know as
resting splint
• Indicated for patient with rheumatoid arthritis, burns flexion
contracture and boutonniere deformity (flexion of the proximal
phalangeal joint )
Corrective Orthoses
• Factory made or custom made
• Indicated for extension contracture of metacarpophalangeal joint
also known as knuckle bender
• The finger extensor orthoses also called revers knuckle bender
correct extension and flexion deformities of the interphalangeal
joints.
Forearm and Elbow Orthoses
Protective and corrective orthoses
• Reduce stress on forearm extensor (Lateral epicondylitis or tennis
elbow hand)
• Elbow flexion Contracture Indicated also for patient with elbow
contracture.
Shoulder Orthoses
Protective orthoses
cuff sling
• Support the weight of the forearm, wrist and hand
• Resist shoulder subluxation
Multi strap
Humeral cuff sling
• Resist shoulder subluxation
Shoulder Orthoses
Corrective orthoses
• the shoulder abductor orthosis is indicated to correct axillary
contracture also called aero plane splint
• If vertically upward the orthoses is also called “statue of liberty “
Fabrication Option
• PP technology
• Low thermoplastic material
