COMMUNICATION
Communication Modes
Refers to the channel through which one
expresses his/her communicative intent.
Views or feelings can be communicated through;
1. Face –to-face Interaction
2. Video
3. Audio
4. Text-based
Face-to-face Interaction
Most common of all these modes
It is an informal or casual conversation
between two or more people.
People engage in social conversation to
establish relationships or maintain them.
It is one way of gaining new acquaintances
or friends.
“ First impression last” – negative or
positive image to the audience.
Video
Web cameras are used to communicate if face-to-
face is not possible/evident.
This could be very effective mode of
communication especially for people separated by
distance.
Used electronic communication/ video calls such
as;
a. skype
b. Viber
c. facebook messenger
d. whatsApp, etc.
A disadvantage is the time zone
difference between countries.
Make a necessary adjustments to
have a successful communication.
Audio
Means transmitted sound.
Only voice of the speaker is heard through
telephone, or answering machine.
If not online, a voice messenger or voice
mail can be sent.
The downside of this mode is not being able
to see the body language or cues of the
person you are talking to.
Audio communication mode is quite
difficult especially if you are listening to
people with different accents.
In relation to the World Englishes
paradigm, others speakers of English apart
from those who speak it as a native language
may find it peculiar listening to the accent of
the Filipinos and also to the producing of
sound.
Text-based Communication
Does not originally provide into video and audio
benefits, it has a wider reach and can disseminate
information to a bigger audience quickly.
These are e-mail, facsimile, text messaging, and
instant messaging.
Social networking sites such as; facebook, twitter,
and instagram offer text-based interaction

of handwritten messages, typewritten
messages, short telegrams, computer-
encoded text as well as landline
telephone conversation, and
audio/video recorded messages.
