Toefl: Test of English As A Foreing Language

The TOEFL test assesses English proficiency of non-native speakers in three sections. The writing section contains two tasks: an integrated writing task and an independent writing task. For the integrated task, test takers read a passage and listen to a lecture on the same topic before writing an essay summarizing the key points of both and showing their relationship. The independent task requires test takers to write an essay expressing their own opinions on a given topic based solely on personal knowledge and experience. Effective strategies for the integrated task include focusing the essay on summarizing the lecture, keeping the response between 200-300 words, and paraphrasing rather than directly quoting the reading passage.

TIPS

 The lecture summary is the most important part of the essay.  That should make up
about 60% of each body paragraph.
 Aim for between 200 and 300 words in total.
 Avoid copying from the reading word for word. Paraphrase as much as you can.
