Post Harvest Technology & Value Addition: Topic: Types of Packaging Material Presented To: Ms. Srishti Chitranshi

Packaging materials can be categorized as flexible, semi-rigid, or rigid depending on their hardness. Flexible materials include plastic films made of polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyamide as well as aluminum foil and papers like glassine and parchment. Semi-rigid materials comprise paperboard, PET and PVC containers, aluminum containers, and molded containers. Rigid containers consist of glass, metal cans, fiberboard, and wooden boxes. Packaging serves the key functions of protection, communication, convenience, and preventing contamination while also influencing storage life and marketability of products.

PACKAGING
• International Packaging Institute (IPI) defines packaging as the enclosure
of products, items or packages in a wrapped pouch, bag, box, cup, tray,
can, tube, bottle, or other container form .

• Packaging have four basic functions of protection, communication,

convenience & contamination

• Packaging is an integral part which has major influence on :

1. Storage life
2. Marketability of products

• It provides a barrier between the food and the environment

PACKAGING MATERIAL
• Depending on the hardness, the packaging materials are of three types :

1) Flexible packaging materials : Plastic films, Paper, Aluminium foil.

2) Semi-rigid packaging materials : Paperboard/cardboard/containers, PET and PVC

containers, Aluminium containers, molded containers.

3) Rigid packaging containers : Glass containers, Metal cans, fibre board containers,
wooden boxes/crates/barrels.

FLEXIBLE PACKAGING MATERIALS

• PLASTIC FILMS
1. Polyethylene(PE) : It is the most commonly used plastic
films of these days due to low cost, easy availability
and
unique properties.

2. Polypropylene(PP) : It has a good gloss, high flex,

strength & resistance. The film is readily heat sealable
and has low water vapour permeability.

3. Polyamide : It is ideal for use in packaging of fresh &

processed foods. It has excellent gas barrier properties.

• ALUMINIUM FOIL : It is highly resistant to most forms of

corrosion. It is used to package food products requiring protection
against light, water vapour , & gases.

• PAPER :
1. Glassine : It is smooth, dense, transparent or semi-transparent
paper manufactured primarily from chemical wood pulps.

2. Parchment paper : It has good grease resistance and high wet strength.
These papers are used for wrapping bacon & other fatty cuts of meats.

SEMI-RIGID PACKAGING MATERIALS

• Paper board : Paper board sheets are cut, folded into desired form
and glued. It provides convenience, strength and good product
protection.

• PET and PVC plastic sheets : It can be moulded in shape, size

and colour to suit specific product requirements. PET bottles and
containers are extremely clear, virtually unbreakable and very light
weight.

• Moulded pulp : containers are the cheapest packaging for the

shell eggs. They allow wholesale trading of eggs along with the
tray.

RIGID PACKAGING MATERIALS

• Glass container : It is very old and versatile packages for food
packaging. It is chemically inert and is an excellent barrier to solids,
liquids and gases.

• Metal cans are primarily used for commercially sterilized food

products. Can bodies are soldered or welded. The product is
hermatically (air tight) sealed in the can.

• Rigid thermoformed plastic containers :The plastic used in the

thermoformed trays are high density polyethylene, polypropylene or
polyvinyl chloride.
