Word Wall

This document provides definitions and examples for key ecological terms: 1) It defines abiotic as a non-living thing that was never living, such as a whiteboard or rock. 2) Competition is described as an event where animals compete for resources like food. 3) Examples of producers, consumers, decomposers, predators, prey, and their roles in ecosystems are outlined. 4) Food chains, webs, pyramids, symbiosis, adaptations, limiting factors, biotic and abiotic factors, communities, and organisms are defined and exemplified.

word wall
This White-board is abiotic because its non living. It is
abiotic because it docent need food air or shelter. Another
example is a rock.
Abiotic
Is a non living thing that was
NEVER living.
•Bottle nosed dolphin  —> big eye
trevally
•They hunt schools of fish in groups so
it’s a race to get the food.

•Cuttlefish <—> Cuttlefish

•They battle to mate by making a zebra
pattern.

•Cheetahs <—> Lions; since both

species feed on similar prey, they are
negatively impacted by the presence of
the other because they will have less
food.

Competition
An event or hunt in which
animals compete
Consumer
• Consumers in a food chain are living creatures
that eat organisms and cannot survive by itself.

• Examples are a cow, a dead animal, and birds.

Decomposer

• An organism, especially a soil bacterium,

fungus, that decomposes organic material.

• Examples are bacteria, fungi’s like

mushroom, and slugs.
Predation
• the preying of one animal.

• There’s 3 main types carnivory, herbivory, parasitism, and

mutualism.

• An example is when an owl hunts mice. Another is when

humans hunt deer.
Predator
• A predator is an animal that eats other animals

• Examples are lions, snakes, and eagles

Prey
• An animal that is hunted and killed by another for food.
• Examples are plants rabbits snakes and bugs.
resources
• A resource is things animals need to survive.
Examples are food, water, and space.
populations
• Population is the number of individuals of a
particular species.
• Examples are a population of fish and a pack
of wolfs or a school.
producer
• Producers are organisms that make their own food. Examples are
plants trees and animals that can survive by them self.
symbiosis
• Interaction between two different organisms
living in close physical association, typically
to the advantage of both. An example is Sea
Anemone and Clownfish, another is Whale
and Barnacle. Another is Decorator Crab and
Sponge
food chain
a series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food. Here are some examples
adaptation
• a change or the process of change by which an organism or
species becomes better suited to its environment. Examples are
squirrels, woodchucks, and chipmunks are able to
hibernate for up to 12 months, often consuming plenty of
food in preparation for winter. In this scenario, these small
animals have found a way to evolve in a season to protect
themselves from harsh weather conditions, preserving
food, and their environment. Another is the maned wolf is
part of the canid family but is only a distant relative. The
theory says their legs evolved to survive the tall grasslands
of South America.
food web
a system of interlocking and interdependent food
chains.
Some examples are:
energy pyramid
• An energy pyramid is a graphical model of
energy flow in a community. Some examples
are:
Ecosystem
• A biological community of interacting organisms and their
physical environment. Examples are a forest, a coral reef, and a
pond.
Limiting factors

• limiting factor resources are

environmental conditions that limit the
growth, abundance, or distribution of an
organism or a population of organisms in
an ecosystem. Examples are food, mates,
and competition with other organisms for
resources.
Biotic is a living
thing. Examples
are humans,
monkeys, and
bacteria.
Community a group of organisms. For example, a forest of
trees and undergrowth plants, inhabited by animals and rooted in soil containing bacteria and fungi, community.
A community could be a school or a city.
Organism an individual animal,
plant, or single-celled life form.
Examples are bacteria, dog, and
a human.
