Cultural Appropriation

Cultural appropriation occurs when a dominant culture adopts cultural elements from a non-dominant culture without proper acknowledgment or respect. It is defined as the unacknowledged adoption of cultural elements like practices, customs, or aesthetics. Appreciation of a culture involves learning from and being guided by members of that culture, while appropriation involves taking cultural elements and asserting authority over them without understanding. Cultural appropriation continues the oppression of non-dominant cultures by not giving them credit for their own practices and creating stereotypes. Examples include white musicians taking credit for rock and roll from black musicians and sports teams with offensive Native American mascot names. To honor other cultures, people should involve representatives in the conversation, thoughtfully

CULTURAL

APPROPRIATION
MARIIA-OLEKSANDRA GONCHARUK
WHAT CULTURAL APPROPRIATION
IS
• happens when a dominant culture takes things from another culture that is
experiencing oppression
• The unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the practices, customs,
or aesthetics of one social or ethnic group by members of another
(typically dominant) community or society
APPRECIATION OR
APPROPRIATION?
• Appreciation:
is to learn more about a culture so you can better understand it
has you looking to others to guide the conversation
keeps you clearly in the role of student

• Appropriation:
you try to use that culture for yourself
you take from others and then put yourself in a position of authority
WHY CULTURAL APPROPRIATION IS A
PROBLEM
• It continues the oppression of the non-dominant culture

• It doesn’t give people credit for their own culture

• It creates stereotypes
EXAMPLES OF CULTURAL
APPROPRIATION
• Rock 'N' Roll:
In the 1950s, white musicians "invented" rock and roll; however, the
musical style was borrowed from black musicians who never received credit.
• Team Mascots:
Major sports teams in the United States and Canada are involved in cultural
appropriation because of the names of the teams.
Past and present team name examples include the Chicago Blackhawks,
Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins, and Edmonton Eskimos. (The
Redskins and Eskimos are both undergoing a name change as of the time of
this writing)
HOW TO HONOR OTHER CULTURES?
• Give more than just credit:
involve the representatives of the culture in the conversation
• Be conscious and intentional:
before you do anything, think about what you’re doing and who it may impact
• Don’t borrow what you don’t understand:
honor cultures you understand in-depth, that you’ve taken serious time to
study
• Educate Yourself
