Background of the Study
Gender violence is not a very unfamiliar
scenario of a third world country like Bangladesh.
Women and girls are the most vulnerable to this
form of violence.
Dowry is one of the most common forms of
gender based discrimination in Bangladesh.
Various factors like orthodox thinking, family
tradition, unproductive role of women, illiteracy,
unemployment, poverty etc are inspiring to
demand dowry from the groom’s family at the
time of their marriage.
Background of the Study
Every year thousands of women used to face serious
social, psychological and physical torture due to
dowry related dispute.
Even though they become the victim of acid
violence; sometimes some are killed by their
husband and their in-laws.
In one year alone, dowry related violence claimed
the lives of 325 women and contributed to 66.7 per
cent of the violent incidents against women (Begum
A., 2014).
So, it is easy to say that the mentality of our society
is liable for this type of violence.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the societal status of rural women.
2. To find out factors which are inspired dowry practice in Bangladesh.
3. To analyze the consequences of dowry related practice on gender
violence.
4. To suggest recommendation for future policy guidelines.
Justification of the study
Every Violence give us a lesson for raising our voice against it.
Dowry related violence is the part of male’s power implement.
The present study will be of great significance as it is intended to
highlight the current scenario of dowry related violence, societal
status of rural women, factors influencing dowry practice, its impact
on gender violence under rural Bangladesh framework .
It may be helpful to the policy makers in formulating plans for
rural women that ensuring equal rights of women and encourage
them to enhance their voice against dowry related violence.
Review of Literature
Authors Findings
The study reveals that among 47 interviewers 30% can’t
think marriage without payment of dowry, 4% think dowry
Khanam (2015) is being used as a means of enriching themselves. 2%
mentioned that dowry is increasing because of lack of
Islamic knowledge. 38% comments that marriage dissolved
due to nonpayment of dowry.
The study finds that dowry is a significant factor for marital
discord. 36% of the married women face dowry-related
Singh (2013) violence. This violence manifested itself in physical,
emotional and economic forms.
The study stated that women physically, sexually,
emotionally, mentally, abused throughout their marital lives
Khan (2006) when fails to meet their dowry demand.

Methodology of the study
Selection of the area
The study will be conducted in some rural areas of Tangail district.
This area will be selected on the purpose of accomplishing
objectives.
Selection of the sample and sampling technique
A sample of 30 female will be selected through purposive
sampling.
Data collection
Primary data will be collected from selected respondents through
face to face interview survey with both structured and unstructured
questionnaires.
Secondary data will be collected from Journal papers, articles and
websites.
