 Water logging and salinity in
          Pakistan
O Water logging and salinity is most one of the
  most severe impediments to Pakistan’s
agriculture. Water logging and salinity affects
25% of irrigated land in Pakistan, reducing
crop yields. It has been reported that 48% of
soils in Sindh and Punjab are saline while 18%
  of those are strongly saline.
  Causes of waterlogging and
     salinity in Pakistan
O High water table
O Hot and dry climate
O Heavy rainfall
O Poor irrigation practices
Effects of Waterlogging
       Remedial measures
O Pumping out groundwater through tube wells helps to lower the
water table of water logged areas.
O Adopting technique of bio-drainage in which water table is
lowered by raising tree planation. It removes excessive water
  through transpiration.
O Afforestation on saline/waterlogged soil through resistant varieties
  of plants.
O Lining of canal to control seepage.
O Quick removal of rain water that will prevent rising of water table.
O SCARP(Salinity Control and Reclamation Project) in Pakistan has
recovered 7.8 million hectares of land.
O Plantation of salt tolerant tress, grasses and crops.
