The Factories Act , 1948
Definition of factory in factories act,
According to Sec. 2(m) factory means: A factory is a premise
whereon ten or more workers are working, or were
working on any day of the preceding twelve months, and in
any part of which a manufacturing process is being carried
on with the aid of power, or is ordinarily so carried on.
• Regarded as one of the noble and a comprehensive Labour
Legislation which is enforce in our country.
• Covers all the aspects relating to workers employed in
factories.
Objectives
The main objective of the Factories Act 1948 is to :
• Ensure adequate safety measures in the factory premises.
• The Factories Act promotes health & welfare of the workers
employed in factories as well as prevents haphazard growth of
factories.
• The Act supports workers from being exploited and casts
duties, obligations and responsibilities on the occupier of a
factory and also on the factory manager for improving the
working conditions within the factory premises.

WORKING HOURS
Section 51 to 66 includes provisions regarding working hours for
adults.
•Sec. 51- Weekly hours
No adult worker is to be required or
allowed to work more than 48 hours in a
week.
• Sec.52- Weekly holidays
•Sec.53- Compensatory holidays
•Sec .54- Daily hours: Not more than
nine hours
HEALTH
Section 11 to 20 of the Factories Act, 1948, deals with the provisions
relating to the workers in a factory.
Cleanliness (Sec.11):
Every factory shall be kept clean and free
from dirty.
There should be such arrangement in the
factory that the wastes (Sec.12):
Dust and Fume(Sec.14)
Ventilation and Temperature (Sec.15)
Overcrowding (Sec.16):
Lighting (Sec.17): There shall be provided
and maintained sufficient and suitable
lighting, natural or artificial, or both, in every
part of the factory.
SAFETY
•Fencing of machinery (Sec.21): in every
factory, the dangerous parts of all
machineries should be securely fenced.
•Employment of young persons on
dangerous machines (Sec 23):
Provides that young person shall be allowed
to work at any machine to which he has
fully instructed
•Prohibition of employment of women
and children near cotton –
openers(Sec.27)
THE WELFARE OF EMPLOYEES
Washing facility separately for women and men.
Separate rooms for men and women for drying of clothes.
Separate rest rooms for men and women.
First Aid boxes equipped with prescribed medicines.
Canteen for use of workers where 250 or more are employed (150 under
Plantation Labour Act)
