CRITERION

REFERENCED AND
NORM-REFERENCED
TEST
Kristine S. Lopez
GFD 2 - A
Understanding Criterion
Referenced and Norm-Referenced
Tests

• Criterion Referenced and Norm-Referenced Testing are two of many

different types of testing method that are employed to assess skills of a
person.
• These tests are used to measure performance, but they are relative to different
criteria.
CRITERION REFERENCED
TESTS
• A TYPE OF TEST THAT ASSESSES THE STUDENT’S ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND A
SET OF CURRICULUM. IN THIS TEST, A CURRICULUM IS SET IN THE BEGINNING
OF THE CLASS, WHICH IS THEN EXPLAINED BY THE INSTRUCTOR.
• AT THE END OF THE LESSON, THE TEST IS USED TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH DID
THE STUDENT UNDERSTAND.
• THIS TEST IS COMMONLY USED TO MEASURE THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING
OF A STUDENT BEFORE AND AFTER AN INSTRUCTION IS GIVEN.
• IT CAN ALSO USED TO DETERMINE HOW GOOD THE INSTRUCTOR IS AT
TEACHING THE STUDENTS.
NORM-REFERENCED
TESTS
• A TYPE OF TEST THAT ASSESSES THE STUDENT’S ABILITY AND PERFORMANCE
AGAINST OTHER STUDENTS. IT COULD ALSO INCLUDE A GROUP OF STUDENTS
AGAINST ANOTHER GROUP OF STUDENTS.
• THIS IS DONE TO DIFFERENTIATE HIGH AND LOW ACHIEVERS.
• THE TEST’S CONTENT COVERS A BROAD AREA OF TOPICS THAT THE STUDENTS
ARE EXPECTED TO KNOW AND THE DIFFICULTY OF THE CONTENT VARIES.
• THIS TEST HELPS DETERMINE THE POSITION OF THE TEST TAKER IN A
PREDEFINED POPULATION.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CRITERION
REFERENCED AND NORM-REFERENCED
TESTS
CRITERION REFERENCED NORM-REFERENCED TEST
TEST

• BASED ON EXTERNAL • COMPARE OR RANK TEST-

CRITERION/STANDARD. TAKERS TO ONE ANOTHER.

• TO FIND OUT HOW MUCH • TO DISCRIMINATE

STUDENTS KNOW BEFORE BETWEEN HIGH AND LOW
INSTRUCTION BEGINS AND ACHIEVERS.
AFTER IT HAS FINISHED.

• STUDENTS KNOW
EXACTLY WHAT CONTENT • STUDENTS HAVE LITTLE
TO EXPECT ON TEST OR NO IDEA WHAT
QUESTIONS. CONTENT TO EXPECT IN
QUESTIONS.
