• Critique the works of contemporary artworks
• Have a more comprehensive understanding of the implication
of technological advancements to our art scene
• Develop a broader understanding of the application and
connection of art to different areas of knowledge.
INTRODUCTION
• What is the pulse of art today?

The “now” is the critics call contemporary, or post modern, which is the product
of artistic sensibilities and attitudes the following modernist period. If we look at
worlds events against its background, we can take into considerations one very
important achievement; technology.

In this chapter we will study some artists who painted the beat of the post modern.
THE CONTEMPORARY ART
• A reference to Contemporary Art meaning “the art of today,” more
broadly includes artwork produced during the late 20th and early 21st
centuries. It generally defines art produced after the Modern Art
movement to the present day. Contemporary artists work in a globally
influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world.
• Contemporary art is art made today by living artists. As such, it
reflects the complex issues that shape our diverse, global, and rapidly
changing world.

ABSTRACTION

Art served as an instrument to promote the agendas of individual politicians curbing


the emerging national identity of Philippine art. Hence, when we finally sets ourselves
free of the entanglements of such political powers, many independent artists and
organizations were formed In the country such us Concerned Artists of the
Philippines , Printmaker Associations of the Philippines, Salingpusa , Ugatlahi,
and many others.
ABSTRACTION
• To give more recognition to artists and folk artists who are important pillars of the
government reestablished awarding systems through the National Artist award,
Gawad CCP para sa Sining, Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan for Philippine
traditional arts, and the revived CCP Thirteen Artist Awards, Private bodies
also developed their own awards systems and have helped in discovering,
promoting and supporting emerging artist of the whole archipelago. These
include the Ateneo Art Awards, Philippine Art Awards of the Philip Morris
Group of Companies, Metrobank’s M.A.D.E. competition, and others
the society’s notion of patriotism,

BENCAB

BenCab
Benedicto Cabrera, better known as BenCab, is a figurative painter from the Philippines. He is
recognised as a pioneer of Philippine art. BenCab's paintings often depict figures wrapped in flowing
fabrics in muted tones and earthy colour palettes.
National Artist for Visual Arts-Benidicto Cabrera has works which span a lot of important
period in our history. One of his work series entitled “Sabel” depicts the disorientation that
Filipinos experienced during the postwar period.
Much of Bencab's art reflects on oppression, showing sympathy for workers, peasants, and the
marginalized.
SABEL

In BenCab's minds eye, Sabel was a


symbol of dislocation, despair, and
isolation — the personification of
human dignity threatened by
circumstance. Sabel captured the mind
of the artist as her makeshift clothing,
made out of throwaway plastic sheets,
created different shapes while she
moved around, scavenging for food.
DAVID MEDALLA
David Cortez Medalla was a Filipino international artist and political
activist. His work ranged from sculpture and kinetic art to painting,
installation, and performance art
“The Avatar in Europe in performance art” as described by art crtitic
Leo Benessa. Performance art is one of the new artistics expression of the
contemporary periof where the artist himself is the artwork.

PACITA ABAD
• One of the women artist in the country that has produced a strong voice and identity when it
comes to women’s art. Born in Batanes,her works are characterized by bold and bright
colors. She traveled to more than 50 countries with work exhibited to more 200 galleries.
• Born in the Philippines in 1946, Pacita Abad studied painting at the Corcoran School of Art
in Washington DC and the Arts Student League in New York.
• Abad became a nomadic artist, painting the globe while working on six continents. She
created more than 4,500 works that have been exhibited in hundreds of museums and
galleries around the world. Abad's travels forged her artistic style, providing both ideological
and technical inspiration.

ELMER BORLONGAN
Elmer Misa Borlongan is a prominent contemporary Filipino painter best known for his
distinctive use of figurative expressionism
Painter of Filipino nuances which he depicted with much dignity in his masterful works.His
paintings are most figurative with subject matters that tackle mostly the daily and mundane
activities and interactions of Filipinos.He is one of the most exceptional in the aspect of
painting in rhe country.
With Salingpusa and Sanggawa, Borlongan lent his prodigious talent for figurative painting to
produce large scale interactive canvases that include works featured in survey shows in
Australia, Denmark, and the US, as well as important mural projects such as the Centennial
paintings in the Malacanang Palace

MARK SALVATUS
Mark Salvatus is an intermedia artist at the forefront of critical discourse on the subject
of urbanization and the socio-economic underpinnings that are made manifest in
densely-populated areas.
Salvatus has created much discourse and narratives in his works on the notions of
urbanization, internet, and technological age with political, social, and economic grounding.
His works are considered intermedia, combining mark-making, sound, videos, and founf
object in his works.
• Mark Salvatus tries to build direct and indirect engagement using objects, photography,
videos, installations and participatory projects that present different outcomes of energies,
meanings and experiences.

LEEROY NEW
One of the youngest recipients of Thirteen Artist Award, Leeroy is an artist of his
own , known mostly for his installation art that are often other-worldy with an alien
feel. He pioneered the “Aliens of Manila”, which are curated photographs of people
wearing his creations of body suits and headgear.
Leeroy New is known for Painting, sculpture. Leeroy New is a
contemporary Filipino fine artist whose works overlap with theatre, film,
fashion, and visual arts. He is a Visual Arts graduate of Philippine High
School for the Arts and a graduate of the University of the Philippines
College of Fine Arts.
ALIENS OF
MANILA
Aliens of Manila is an artistic
series started in 2014 by
Filipino multidisciplinary
artist Leeroy New, that re-
appropriates the archetypal
New York street-style
photography by referencing the
series Humans of New York.
ARCHIE OCLOS
Archie Oclos, a Street Artist / Muralist whose body of works focuses centrally on the
plights of farmers, indigenous people and socio-political themes.
He has always been active in the public sphere,painting murals depicting social
realities of both the present and the memories of the past governments . He was
recently awarded one of the Thirteen Artist of CCP.
In public murals, Oclos focuses on the lives and struggles of ordinary people --
farmers, indigenous people, and other underrepresented sectors.
MAGSASAKA

is Filipino for 'Farmer,' and
celebrating the Filipino farmer's
work is a message close to
Archie's heart.
MARS BUGAOAN
• A young and emerging artist whose works echo the displacement that we often
experience because of the demands of work globalization. His works has evolved
from printmaking to being sit responsive, incorporating the landscape of the site into
the installation of the art piece.
• WELL-KNOWN for his monotype prints on heated plastic bags, Mars Bugaoan was
among contemporary visual artists featured in back-to-back exhibits in Makati City,
Jan. 12 to 18.
“UNDER THE
SAME STAR”
In “Under The Same Star” which serves as
an ”introspection about vulnerability and
impermanence”, Bugaoan creates rubber
cut prints and installation of dried
banana leaves he found in the
backyard. The exhibition becomes a
testament of time and space as it also
examines the notion of absence and the
state of “now, being fully absorbed [in
the] present moment”
