On OHTL + UG

The document provides an overview of transmission lines used for electrical power transmission, distinguishing between overhead transmission lines (OHTL) and underground cables. It classifies transmission lines into short, medium, and long overhead lines, as well as various voltage levels for overhead towers. A comparison highlights differences in cost, maintenance, distance, location, required space, safety, and fault possibilities between OHTL and underground cables.

Overview of the design of

Transmission Lines
INDEX
Section 1: Overhead Transmission Line (OHTL)

- Usage:
The Transmission Lines are used for the transmission of electrical power from
generating side to the various distribution units.
There are two types of Transmission Lines overhead lines and buried power cables.
CLASSIFICATION OF TRANSMISSION LINES

1. Overhead transmission line:

• Short transmission lines (33 / 13.8 kV)
• Medium transmission lines (
• Long transmission lines

2. Underground cables
Examples of Transmission Lines:

DIRECT BURIED POWER CABLES POWER CABLE JOINT POWER CABLES in TUNNEL
Examples of Transmission Lines:

33kV MEDIUM VOLT- 110kV HIGH VOLTAGE 380kV EXTRA HIGH GANTRY STRUCTURE
AGE TOWERS TOWERS VOLTAGE TOWERS
Comparison between OHTL and UG:

OHTL UG

COST Low cost High cost

Maintenance Easy / Less Time / Low cost Difficult / Long Time / High cost

Distance Long Short

Location Remote Area Inside City

Required space (ROW) Large Small

Safety Low High

More Likely Less Likely
Possibility of Fault
Thunder, Storm, lighting, etc As it is isolated and buried
