Laytime Concept

This document discusses key concepts related to laytime and calculating laytime in voyage charter contracts. It defines laytime as the permitted time for loading/discharging cargo, demurrage as additional fees for delays beyond laytime, and dispatch as fees paid to the owner for completing cargo operations early. The document outlines factors considered in laytime calculations such as commencement, interruptions, and cessation of laytime, as well as different laytime calculation methods including definite, calculable, and indefinite laytime.

LAYTIME

Dr. Sedat Baştuğ

LAYTIME
Laytime is the time permitted in a contract for loading
and/or discharging a voyage chartered ship.
DEMURRAGE
Demurrage means an agreed amount payable to the
owner in respect of delay to the vessel beyond the
laytime, for which the owner is not responsible.
DESPATCH
Despatch means an agreed amount payable by the
owner if the vessel completes loading or discharging
before the laytime has expired.
CALCULATION OF LAYTIME
Read the relevant clauses in the governing “charter
party”
Obtain the “stament of facts”
Determine how much laytime is avaliable
Establish the “commencement” of laytime
Allow for “interruptions” to laytime
Establish when laytime will cease
Calculate how much “despatch or demurrage” is
payable
DURATION IN LAYTIME CALCULATION
Definite Laytime
Calculable Laytime
Indefinite Laytime
Definite Laytime

“Cargo to be loaded within five weather working days

of 24 consecutive hours”.
“Cargo to be discharged within three weather working
days of 24 consecutive hours”.

“Eight working days of 24 consecutive hours, weather

permitting, for all purposes”.

“Eight total days”.

Calculable Laytime

Tonnage Calculation:
Loading rate: 10,000 mts pwwd of 24 cons hrs sshinc
Discharging rate: 8,000 mts pwwd of 24 cons hrs sshex
eiu
 Cargo: 40,000 mts min/max
 Laytime at loading port=40,000/10,000=4 days

 Laytime at discharging port=40,000/8,000=5 days

Calculable Laytime
Hatch Calculation:
Per Hatch Daily

Per Workable Hatch Daily

Calculable Laytime
 Cargo: 7,000 mts
 Discharge rate 175 mts per hatch daily
 1575 mts cargo in the largest cargo compertment

 Vessel has 5 hatches

 Per Hatch Daily = 7,000 / (5x175 mts) = 8 days

 Per Workable Hatch Daily = 1,575 mts / 175 = 9 days

Indefinite Laytime

Custom of the Port (COP)

Customary Despatch (CD)
Customary Quick Despatch (CQD)
Fast As Can (FAC) “As fast as the vessel can”
Damages for Detention
Shipowner/operator bears risk of bad weather, port
