Course Description

We are now living in a world of information media. Every day,


we interact with various and numerous advertisements on TV,
radio as well as in our electronic gadgets. Each of our daily
moves will always encounter visual ads of products, from food
to mechanical equipment. This unit 12 discusses two media
that are usually used to give information—poster and banner.
This unit covers the theoretical concepts of poster and banner.
People usually use poster and banner to inform or promote an
event or a product.
Course Description

In this unit, we will learn about the definition, generic structure,


and the language feature of poster and banner. After learning
those things, you are expected to be able to identify poster and
banner. By having the ability, you are demanded to be able to
produce poster and banner with correct generic structure and
language features. In the end on this unit, you will practice
reading some posters and banners to review your ability in
understanding the content of posters and banners. You will
also have a better knowledge on poster and banner and kow
their similarities and differences.
Poster

Poster is one medium that is used to give information or


advertise things to people. It can be printed on a cloth or
posted on a website. A poster is a large notice or picture that
you stick on a wall or board, often in order to advertise
something (collinsdictionary.com). It can be monochrome or
multicolored, and the key is that it has text and images to
convey a message (

has specific characteristics that make it as a poster.
Types of Poster

As mentioned before, a poster conveys messages.


Depending on the information given, there are some types
of posters:
- Advertising poster; it is used to advertise things. It usually
has the picture of the product being sold.
- Political poster; It is used not only to inform about upcoming
political leaders but also to invite people to join a certain
body (like army or police) to take part in managing the
country.
Types of Poster

Movie poster; It gives a glimpse of a new movie.


Affirmation and motivational poster; It is usually put
in offices or schools to motivate the viewers to
have a better motivation in working or learning.
Event poster; It informs about upcoming events like
concerts, fairs, or competitions.
Types of Poster

Travel poster; It encourages people to visit a


destination. It gives information what people can find
in the tourist attraction.
Educational poster; It shows the result of research
work.

Generic Structure

A poster is usually designed in a systematic way. It usually has the


following parts:
1. Heading; It shows the main idea of the poster.
2.Pictures; It not only attracts people’s attention but also conveys
messages.
3. Messages; It gives information, instruction, warning, motivation,
or advice to the audience.

Generic Structure

However, an educational poster has its own structure


that follows the research paper:
1. Title; It shows the title of the paper or the research
work.
2. Subtitles; It specifies the title.
3. Description of the situation or problem proposed.
4. Formulation of the objectives

Purpose of Poster

A poster usually has specific ways to attract the


audience attention and sends messages at the same
time. The language features of a poster are as follows:
- Using pictures; It can be any related pictures or logo or
symbol of the producer.
- Using phrases or short sentences; The phrase or
sentence usually gives more information about the
picture or messages intended to convey.
Banner

A banner has the same purpose as a poster. A banner and a


poster convey messages. However, banners are usually
bigger than a poster and consist of mainly letters. They are
usually hung, not posted on a wall, like a poster. In addition,
banner is designed to be readable from a distance.

Banner

A banner is a short functional text that is used to


promote things or event and to give information.
Banners can be put indoor, outdoor, and on the website,
too. The banner aims to promote a brand and tells the
readers that this product has certain good qualities for
one’s wellness.
Generic Structure & Language Features

The banner has its generic structure:


1. Title; The title informs what the banner is about.
2. Body; The body gives more detailed information about
the title.
The following is the language features of a banner:
- Using present tense
- Using certain verbs to persuade the readers to do
something: register, come, try.
Exercises:

1. To whom the poster/banner is written? (templates 8, 9, or 23).


2. What is the purpose of the posters/banners?
3. What features can you find in each of the posters that make
them fit in each type of poster?
4. How are the posters/banners are similar or different in terms
of their generic structure & language features?
5. Which ones of the posters/banners do you like most? Why?
