A good way to
maximize the space and
make more harvest is to
make use of recycled
containers. Almost any
vegetable that will grow in
a typical backyard garden
will also do well as a
container-grown plant.

Plants in pots can

easily be moved to suit
your needs or to a more
suitable sunny or shady
location during the day.
Here in UECS, the school promotes recycling
and less-expensive gardening. Thus containers are
mostly improvised from unused materials.
Different containers/planters used in gardening:
1. Tire wheel
2. Commercial plastic pots
3. Plastic bottles of 1.5 softdrinks
4. Purified water containers
5. Purified water bottles
6. Washing machine shell
7. Soft plastic plant pot(black)
8. Cement/rice sacks
9. Rubber Pots
10. Empty Containers
11. Bags & Shoes
12. Used & worn Cookwares
13. Bayong
14. Tin Cans
A trellis is a simple
framework of vertical
supports and horizontal
crosspieces that is flat and
can train plants—like shrubs,
small or young trees, or vines
—to grow up and against an
object. It can be used as an
accent piece in a garden or,
when it fills in, as a privacy
screen.

The very purpose of

the trellis is to support
climbing plants, which
cannot stand straight like a
tree. With the aid of the
trellis, the climbing plant
wraps around the trellis
and adds decoration to a
garden.
Umabay Exterior Central
School put up trellis along other
variant of crops. You can find in
our school garden the following
kinds of trellis made from bamboo
tree, kagingking, and steel bars.

 Tunnel type trellis

 U-type trellis

 I-type trellis

 A-type trellis

Organic fertilizers
are naturally available mineral
sources that contain moderate
amount of plant essential
nutrients. They are capable of
mitigating problems associated
with synthetic fertilizers. ...
They gradually release
nutrients into the soil solution
and maintain nutrient balance
for healthy growth of crop
plants.
Organic fertilizers that we
used in our school are:

1. Carbonized Rice Hull

2. Sawdust
3. Animal Manure
4. Coco Peat
5. Organic Fertilizers from
the LGU
6. Coconut Husk Mulching
Using coconut
coir as mulch is an
environmentally friendly
alternative to non-
renewable mulches, such as
peat moss that might
contain chemicals or
harmful plastics.

Coconut husk fiber for

plants retains water and
keeps them well hydrated. It
breaks down slowly, adding
nutrients right back into the
soil.

Our school used this as

an organic fertilizer since
this is abundant in our
locality.
It is made from partial
burning of rice hull. This mixture
is a very good soil fertilizer and
conditioner as it contains
Phosphorous (P), Potassium (K),
Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg),
and micronutrients vital to growing
crops.

Our school used carbonized

rice hulls as organic fertilizers. We
asked from nearby rice mills in
Brgy. Umabay Exterior.
Scattering sawdust
around the base of the
garden plants can
prevent weeds, help
hold moisture, and keep
roots cooler. Adding a
nitrogen component to
the garden must be
done, in order to prevent
nitrogen deficiency in
the soil and eventually
serve as a fertilizer.
Our school used sawdust
as organic fertilizers
since it is abundant in
our locality.
It is an organic matter
that is obtained from
animal feces. These are
derived naturally and have
no harmful impact on the
soil and environment.
Most of the feces came
from horses and carabaos.

Our school also used

this animal manure as
organic fertilizers. Parents
would give this manure
voluntarily to be used in
our garden.
Also known as 'coir
dust', a natural and
renewable resource
produced from coconut
husks. It is produced as a
bi-product when coconut
husks are processed for the
extraction of the long
fibers from the husk.

It is also abundant in
our locality and many of
the parents would give it
freely in our school as an
organic fertilizer to our
plants in the garden.
This Organic
Fertilizers were provided
by the LGU-Mobo
Department of
Agriculture.

Through the initiative

of our School GPP
Coordinator, Mr. Noel M.
Sanay, we were able to
acquire this supply as an
additional fertilizers
utilized in our school
garden.
A challenge for any gardener is the control
of destructive pests and insects throughout the
year. But rather than use sprays and chemicals,
it's possible to use plants to help manage
pests.

Pest controlling plants are those that repel

or confuse insects with strong scent, such as
oregano, and those that attract beneficial
insects such as cosmos. These plants often
have flowers or foliage that attract insects that
prey on other pests in the garden.

MALUNGGAY
Many plants and minerals have
insecticidal properties; that is, they are toxic
to insects.  Botanical insecticides are
naturally occurring chemicals (insect toxins)
extracted or derived from plants or
minerals.  They are also called natural
insecticides.

Botanical insecticides destroy only

the insects they are meant to kill.

The following organic pesticides derived from
plant extracts are used in our school gulayan:

 Niyog Extract
Best for demolishing aphids and cale insects,
and also as insect egg sterilizer.

 Makabuhay and Lemon Grass
Extract
Good for exterminating worms, atangya,
beetles and aphids.

 Garlic Extract
Good for killing sucking insects.

 Sili Extract
Best for destroying worms, aphids and ants.
NIYOG EXTRACT
Best for demolishing aphids and cale
insects, and also as insect egg
sterilizer.
MAKABUHAY & LEMON GRASS EXTRACT
Good for exterminating worms,
atangya, beetles and aphids.

Ingredients:
1 kilo makabuhay
½ kilo lemon grass
1 piece perla bar

Procedure:
1. Chop makabuhay and lemon grass into
small pieces.
2. Bring them to boil for 1 hour.
3. Drain the boiled mixture and let them
cool dowm.
4. Scrub the perla into very thin pieces.
Let it soak in ½ liter of water
overnight.
5. Mix the dissolve perla to the plant
extract. Perla soap serves as sticker
to plant during application of this
pesticides.
GARLIC EXTRACT
Good for killing sucking insects.

Using Garlic for Pest Control There are a
couple ways to use garlic as a pest control.
The most common is to make a garlic spray for
pests. Examples of some of the unwelcome
insects that can be controlled utilizing a
garlic spray include:
Aphids Ants
Beetles
Borers
Caterpillars
Armyworms
Slugs Termites
Whiteflies

Procedure:
1.Crush 1 garlic in a food processor, blender
or with a mortar and pestle.
2. Add to this, one liter of water to 1 bar
of perla soap, preferably grated.
3. Strain the mixture through some cheesecloth
two times to remove any bits of garlic
that may clog the spray bottle.
4. Store the concentrated garlic in a glass
jar with a tight fitting lid.
SILI EXTRACT
Best for destroying worms, aphids and ants.
Chilli contains capsaicin, a chemical which
causes a painful burning or stinging sensation
on skin and eyes.

Procedure:
1. Crush and pound the chillies, working them into
a paste.

2. Place the paste on a fine muslin cloth and bring

the sides together making a cloth bag enclosing the
paste. Place the cloth bag in a bucket adding
sufficient water to cover the bag for at least 1
hour, preferably overnight.

3. After soaking, squeeze the juice from the bag

with hands protected by rubber gloves or plastic
bags.

4. For each 1L water of the final mix, add 10ml (1

bottle cap) cooking oil and 5g (1/2 bottle cap)
perla soap.

5. Check to see if the mix contains plant material

which might block the sprayer. If it does, strain
through fine muslin or a metal strainer.

6. Add water to achieve final volume; pour into the

sprayer, and use.
QUALITY OF
PRODUCTION
To achieve successful and
sustained production of good
quality fruits and vegetables,
application of appropriate
knowledge and management
practices were implemented.
To make sure that our
fruits and vegetables are safe
to eat, it is important and in
our top priority to have a
good-quality produce by
using only organic fertilizers.
It is evident as shown in the
pictures the quality of
vegetables harvested from
our garden from the texture,
color, and good shape.
QUALITY OF
PRODUCTION
For the quantity of
production as recorded in
our record of harvest and
sales, we have an
adequate aount of
vegetables for
consumption in the
feeding program and the
rest of it was sold at the
tiangge at Umabay
Exterior.

Scarecrow is a device posted on cultivated
ground to deter birds or other animals from
eating or otherwise disturbing seeds, shoots, and
fruit; its name derives from its use against the
crow. The scarecrow of popular tradition is a
mannequin stuffed with straw; free-hanging,
often reflective parts movable by the wind are
commonly attached to increase effectiveness.
A scarecrow outfitted in clothes previously
worn by a hunter who has fired on the flock is
regarded by some as especially efficacious.

Wind chimes are a type of
percussion instrument constructed from
suspended tubes, rods, bells or other objects
that are often made of metal or wood. The
tubes or rods are suspended along with some
type of weight or surface which the tubes or
rods can strike when they or another wind-
catching surface are blown by the
natural movement of air outside. They are
usually hung outside of a building or
residence as a visual and aural
garden ornament.
