In the early 1800s slavery was made illegal in the
British Empire and in the northern states of the U.S.A.
There are many reasons why slavery was made illegal.
In today’s lesson we will look at three different
arguments as to why slavery was abolished and we
will come to the judgement of which was the most
important.

Abolition = to get rid of something
In 1807, the British Parliament made the
slave trade illegal. If the Royal Navy
found a ship carrying slaves, the Captain
would be fined £100 per slave onboard.
Between 1808 and 1860, the Royal Navy
freed 150,000 enslaved people.
